***Pre-Season GameDay Thread - Colts @ Bengals***
Cedric Johnson looks to be a keeper. Burton looked good. All looked good. Battle looked good in his limited exposure.

Cutdowns will be interesting.

My question after this preseason run is how do you give Burton minutes and actually get him open

The only thing on tape for Burton right now is to not leave him 1 on 1 VS CB3/CB4’s. I guess you can put him on Tee’s side in 3WR sets and guaruntee that safety doesn’t cheat to Chase but I’d damn near put my CB2 on him whenever he enters the game even if Tee is out there too cause if i was a DC my only goal would be to not let Burton get a 1v1 VS a lesser corner

Put Burton in motion and send him out on posts. He's a mismatch so he'll either be open or they'll be leaving Chase open.

Matt Lee looks like a steal. Josh Newton has looked good. Cedric Jackson is shining. Njongmeta looks like a steal as a UDFA. This one looks different. But I don’t discount your thoughts of the past.

This isn't meant to be a negative post just to be negative, but here's how i see that.

Mims. Love him so far but he's a question mark for a full 17 game season.
Burton. Love him so far but he's a question mark with the attitude.
All. Love him so far but he's coming off an ACL and spinal surgery the year before.

Those are the top 3 that are expected to contribute immediately and they all have significant question marks.

Lee, Newton, Jackson, Njongmeta. All guys down the depth chart that "show promise". That does nothing for us right now.

I get that you (and many others) are still able to ramp up the enthusiasm year after year, but i lost that in '21. I've seen too many seasons end in disappointment, no playoffs, playoff loss, super bowl loss. I've seen too much 'what if', too many injuries at the worst time and injuries that affected a promising QBs career.

We're facing that with Burrow now. Two season ending injuries in 4 years and massive question marks with his wrist this year. Can't sign Jesse Bates, lose him, turn around and can't sign Tee Higgins and will probably lose him and now they're ***** around with Chase. Let's see how that works out.

As soon as they win the SB, i'll come back around to being super positive and optimistic. Until then, i have nothing but skepticism.

Thanks, everyone, for participating tonight. Win or lose, a Bengals' game is always better with company.

And to all a good night.

That SB team had no business in that game. OL was awful. Joe had 2 straight years of health. I get the frustration over the signings. Yes they run scared in the FO. But signing Tee & Chase was never going to happen. Chase will get signed. They’ll lose Burrow if they don’t. Bates i don’t think warranted 16 million. Sure if he’d played like he did in ‘23. Burrow has looked good. I get your frustration. The season needs to start lol.

You sum things up pretty well there, rfaulf34. I feel the same. Until they can stack some SB trophies up (if that even means something to players nowdays, I said this myself) then it is all hopeful talk and the Bengals are just another team falling short.

Yeah man I had this team going 12-5 before camp.

I'm going to back off that quite a bit and now say 9-8.

I expect disappointment especially out of the gate - again.

I saw virtually nothing to be excited about.

If the right guys stay healthy, 12-5 is easily done. That's the only question mark. Health. Just like always.

We are going to have to be able to run the ball. Joe cannot throw 70% of the time. Establish the run and don’t go away from it.

I really am not as optimistic as I was the last couple of years that's for sure. Hopefully Burrow stays healthy and shows us major reasons to stay optimistic this year and the future.

I didn't go through this thread last night, and could only get through about page 3 this morning before I had to bail on the ridiculousness. The colts were playing their starters the whole first half against our 3's and 4's, and if I remember right (because I fell asleep) the game was tied 7-7 at the half. And people are on here declaring the Bengals a disaster and a 9-win team. I mean, did I miss something, is there a prize for the most ridiculous post during the game thread?

I went into the game last night trying to focus on the TE group because I think it's still a battle. (Hudson was the worst of the bunch this pre-season hands down) but Cedric Johnson forced me to pay attention to him. Johnson was tearing it up so bad the Colts started doubling him and watching him split doubles with his first step was awesome.

Offensively Joe looks really good and Zac is very happy. Burton is a bright spot. They need to figure his role. Isovias looks improved and ready to contribute. Gesicki may start slow but you see his impact in the Redzone. I didn’t get a feel for the run game but our OL size has to matter. So I think they wanted more explosiveness in the offense and I think they have. Tee looks locked and loaded.

Defensively Dax looks to have emerged and if he can play well he’s athletic as heck. The safeties we’ve heard are playing great. I don’t have much of a feel for the defense yet. I thought the preseason showed little.

Erick All might be a week 1 starter depending on the formation and opening play.

How can you come to that conclusion when the starters only played 2-3 series in one game and looked really good?

We went 9-8 last year without Joe for the last 7-8 games, defense was horrible, schedule was tough as hell and we still almost made the playoffs. Better OL on paper this year and Joe is back and our schedule is not as tough as last year. If we stay somewhat healthy 12-13 wins should be attainable.

Some of it is a reflection on coaching. Strong coaching should lead to better results than we've had with backups. No it isn't an ideal situation but that is what the coach is supposed to do.

Right now we have won exactly 0 games in 2024. We haven't won any games yet this year. Taking for granted that we will win a lot of games is the wrong way to look at it IMO.

Also, even if we do go 12-5, at some point in the season some of those losses (or unconvincing wins) will lead to the following narrative in the press and with the fans: "What is wrong with the Bengals?" It may happen in the first 5 games. That's my prediction. I hope I'm wrong and, given that we could still end with a strong record maybe it doesn't mean a whole lot but I also won't say that too loudly because some part of football is an expectations game. And that isn't just the players, that is the press and the fans or people in the personal lives of those affiliated with organization as well. All of it effects the collective mood which I believe does impact what happens on the field.

So I don't want to be negative. I don't want to say "I could see us going 2-15 this year". But I don't want to be too positive either. We haven't played any games yet and there are parts of this team that are suspect. We have some incredibly tough opponents on our schedule. No expectation might be the healthiest and most sane thing you can have.

Our backup linemen on both sides of the ball gave Indy's starters all they wanted. We are finally getting some line depth.
