Sam Hubbard reveals this summer he was told surgery would knock him out for the entire 2024 season.

Instead, the longest-tenured player on the Bengals roster opted to push forward.

With the injury also to Myles Murphy through the first half or so of games plus Sample out all year, it really would have put a detriment on the DEs without Hubbard.
It would have meant Ossai and 6th round rookie Cedric Johnson rotating in opposite of Hendrickson.


Unless people think they Bengals would have gone out and spent money on a veteran fill-in that could have contributed ~5-7 sacks, but I doubt it.
They had their chance to get Ngakoue and hadn't pursued him.
The rest of the guys available are pretty terrible.

There's not enough urgency with this organization to have given up good draft picks for a stopgap DE either.

What I'm getting at is even if they didn't have Hubbard, it wouldn't be any kind of impactful player they would have added.
It would have been a Lawrence Guy type of stopgap.

And what I mean by not bothering with Ngakoue is he was available in the offseason. Ravens didn't pick him up until Sept 20. Bengals could have signed him if they wanted to, as Murphy was out for 1+ month.

Hard to argue the choice but Jared Verse was the next player taken.

This upcoming draft class has pass rushers it doesn't have Offensive Tackles. Looks like it's going to be a good class for grabbing DL and RBs.

It was a grade-3 hamstring tear, which Dr. Google says is a complete tear, as a grade-1 is just a minor strain.

I appreciate his heart in wanting to play, but very much disagree with his decision to not have surgery as he has been invisible all season hurting a defense which is by far the weakest link on the whole of the team.

I’m sure they loved Mims but were/are counting on the 22 year old DE that they had just picked the year before so didn’t want to take another DE.

If they were interested, they should have quietly slipped in a 7th for him. Playing the waiver wire game is too risky

If he was told this Summer, it was already too late for the management to make any sort of meaningful moves to mitigate the loss of Sam for the year. Free Agency and the Draft had already passed. They could have gotten desperate and overpaid in a trade for someone, but that doesn't really seem like the Bengals way of doing things.

Sam has been pretty beat up the past couple of seasons, I'm suspecting that he's likely just trying to complete his contract and retire from football.

Completely agree Millhouse. Not cool by Sam, he hurt the team, this isn't a good thing. He has been invisible almost all year and if he 
would of went on IR it would of made the FO add someone as Pally says. Thought there was something wrong with him. Murphy and 
Ossai finally were making plays in the 2nd half last night but we need to add another End early in the Draft.

I feel like we need to sign a proven free agent on the line. These draft picks take several years to pan out...IF they ever do.

We need immediate improvement.

We need a veteran CB and veteran DT/DE.

Sounds good to me as I cannot disagree. Any way to fill the void and of course proven is always better, just wish the FO saw it this way.

My prediction is they shy away from free agency more and more as Burrow's contract kicks in.

Will they? Who knows? They might let him play his final year and tag him. You never know with the Bengals.

Look at Chad Johnson/Ochocinco - He was basically done being a star WR after year 7. Chase is going to be done with Year 4 soon.

AJ Green was dominant through 1st 5 years. Then fell off somewhat next 2. Then, continued to decline.

Maybe Chase will be more Steve Smith and productive later? But, there's a chance he has 3 more years of being great. I sure hope not, but looking at other guys careers...it's possible.

But, I could see the Bengals letting him play out his rookie deal. Then tagging him once or twice, which takes him through Year 7.

Sure hope we just pay the man, I see him being more of a Steve Smith type anyways. Dude is built and knows how to avoid taking the big hits.

Chase will hold out first. No way he comes back next year on his rookie contract with the way the teams losing right now. Winning and money motivates these players and if you're not winning that only leaves money as a motivating factor. Chase had a hold "in" this year with 2 years left on his rookie deal. The Bengals will pay him in the off season to show the fans and season ticket holders they are trying to do something. I imagine Trey will get a reworked deal also. After paying the big three next year, what's left for the other 50 guys on the roster?
