This is what I would expect an emergency 4th tackle to perform, which is well below average.

The reason I was chiming in so much on Ford was because of the proposal to try to find another starting spot for him once OBJ was back.
He's not good enough to get a starting spot once OBJ is back, even over Volson and Cappa.

If I was to do anything, I'd look to try to either see if Matt Lee could be ok playing one of the OG spots or shift Karras to LG, bench Volson, and have Lee cover C.

Alright... I know Bengals fans by nature love them some 6th and 7th round players, but what makes everyone think Matt Lee will be the answer at C, G, or anywhere for that matter?
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

Based on the limited snaps I saw in preseason and what I saw of him in college, I think he's probably the best C the Bengals have drafted in quite some time.
I especially like his pass blocking.

Also, maybe not crap on 6th/7th round Centers, as Karras was a 6th rounder.
Miami starting C was a UDFA.
Chicago starting C was a UDFA.
Denver starting C was a 7th rounder.

Sometimes good players do end up coming from that late. It's not often, but it happens. You know this.

And I'm not saying I 100% am confident in Matt Lee being the answer at C, but I'd like to see him get some snaps if/when the Bengals get eliminated from playoffs.
At that point, nothing trying to play for the current season. It's all about seeing what you got and developing going into next.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Right

Who knows what Lee is or isn't? But it's not like we can get worse on the IOL. Give him a shot

Not to mention that Ted Karras turns 32 in March, so he's getting kinda long in the tooth. He probably doesn't more than 2-3 seasons left.

Given how Volson has played now halfway through his 3rd year and 26 years old, he's probably at or close to what he's going to be in terms of ceiling. At least for the Bengals in the current scheme.

If the Bengals end up out of the playoffs in a few weeks, I'd love to try Matt Lee at C and shift Karras to LG for the remainder of the season.
Karras is still under contract next season, so what if Lee at C + Karras at LG ends up being an upgrade overall going into next season?

I see what you're getting at, and at this point I totally agree with your last sentence. I just found it funny that a lot of us think the answer is just waiting further down the roster. Your knowledge of college players far exceeds mine, so I definitely have to defer on Lee. I do know that guys like Yoshi and Tate aren't and weren't the answer to any questions... Not that those are questions you asked.

I give the Bengals 3-4 more wins.
7-10 or 8-9 record to end the year.

I agree I think LAC and DEN take the last couple WC spots.
IND first one out, followed by MIA then CIN.

Tankathon.com currently has Bengals picking 10th if season ended today.
I'll guess around 15th when all is said and done, give or take a couple.

That's my take as well. You hear people saying RG and LG upgrade for next season. I'm not so sure C isn't in there as well?

If Lee can be a starter at C, big if still. Perhaps Karras can play LG next season? But we still need a new and better RG and depth. And I'm not totally sold on going with Karras for sure as starting LG.

Or in other words we need a lot of help with IOL next season. And that's just for starters.

I suggested that scenario recently and was met with "Only if Joe Burrow is on the bench, because I don't want him getting killed while they experiment with the OL".

Positivity is always welcome in my book even when I'm being negative.

and it may not be the Bengals year but I'm in it for the long haul anyway.

I mean, if the team didn't wanna risk Burrow's health and they were already out of the playoffs, sure bench Burrow and give Allen some reps.
Whatever gives some of these dudes some experience.

Well, in my example I also called for Tee to be benched and Burton to get the majority of WR2 reps, in an effort to get on track for a strong season next year. I really feel like the team needs to put Burton to the fire and see if he's going to make it, or it's time to keep fishing.

I am with you Go Cards. Let's just start by beating those stealer bastids and the positivity can just build from there eh?
