Trading Stars to Rebuild: A case study
#1
So the Bengals have Higgins, Chase, and Hendrickson that are stars and would be worth a lot on the market.

We all see how great the Lions are. Well how did they get some of these players? A: By trading Stafford.

Lions gained:
QB Jared Goff
WR Jameson Williams (first round, 12th overall)
RB Jahmyr Gibbs (first round, 12th overall)
TE Sam LaPorta (second round, 34th overall)
DL Josh Paschal (second round, 46th overall)
DT Brodric Martin (third round, 96th overall)
DB Ifeatu Melifonwu (third round, 101st overall)

https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2023/5/1/23705974/matthew-stafford-jared-goff-trade-final-results-detroit-lions-players-accumulated

How good would the Bengals look if they traded Tee Higgins for a 2nd and 3rd Round pick and drafted LaPorta at TE and a CB or DT in the 3rd?

Instead, we're likely to lose Tee for a compensatory pick.

Maybe, it's better to trade these guys in lost seasons...

You also have to take into account that the Lions hit on all of those picks. There's a good chance that if the Bengals had those same six selections that four of them wouldn't pan out.

Would be for trading Tee and maybe even Trey if we could help the team but we need to add more scouts so we can hit on the Draft
like Sunset said. The Lions know what they are doing as far as drafting, our current staff and scouting department doesn't.

I think the Lions may win a SB at some point here.

Yes. And...the Lions were arguably a terribly run franchise for years that missed on picks. Now, they have a good gm and coach.

Trey Hendrickson should be on the table if the right offer comes along. 30+ with 1 year left on his deal but back to back awesome seasons at an premium position will keep his price high. Multiple top 50 picks including a 1st rounder is not out of the question.

Trey would likely be 2 1sts for a return, right?

Yes. So Trey asked to be traded this offseason, and they immediately refused.

Why not listen to offers?

Tee is going to walk for a comp pick. Might have been able to get a 2nd and 3rd.

I would think a 2nd and 3rd,similar to what the Broncos got for Von Miller.

Yep, think they are the front runner this season. Putting up Madden numbers right now and they have a good Defense and ST's.

Same thing I was thinking, Trey would fetch some good value even if he is our only great pass rusher.

One 1st and another top 50 pick anyways which is damn good value if you can hit on the picks.

Only way I am for franchising Tee again is for a Tag and trade. Could be better value yah never know than just waiting on the comp pick/s.

The Tee Higgins situation is interesting because they could double tag and trade him, but teams would know it's for trade purposes only and the 26m guaranteed will have to be factored into whatever contract he signs. I'd put about a 5% possibility any of that happens... I think it's a hell of alot more possible for rhe Bengals to lower Tee's comp pick from a 3rd to a mid day 3 pick with a few cheap FA signings.

The Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill for 5 Picks as well; Depending on how Chase's Contract negotiations go that might be an option for him.

It's certainly possible, and this trade might go down as a "win-win".

I just think that mentioning the Goff trade would be a better argument for going "all-in" like the Rams did when while we have the cornerstones like Trey, Tee, Chase and Burrow. Especially considering our questionable drafting outside of the top 10. Maybe we should have mortgaged the future and traded some first round picks to shore up the defense.

Because ownership let football people run the show, finally.

Lol, that was because they still had Kelce and Hill was the "other" star player. Similar to Chase and Higgins.

Yup, their current owner only took over full control of the team in 2020, fired the HC and GM mid-season, then poached the Saint's assistant head coach and the Ram's director of college scouting to be their new HC and GM.

Nah, Hill is the better player between the 2. Plus he's much younger than Kelce.

And if we trade Hendrickson, we still the awesome pass rusher..............

We shouldn't be trading for draft picks, we should nbe trading picks for players
