Poll : What Is Wrong With Bengals Defense 2024 ???
#1
There are no wrong answers, except if you say Steelers, because Bengals have gave up a ton of points in other games.

So my question is : Bengals had a Super Bowl Defense in 2021, so what happened ? Who is gone ? How do they rebuild this Defense ?

I'll say I don't think the D Coach is the problem, he was part of the Super Bowl season. I have to think the Front Office got rid of too many D Players.

Again, here is the problem. If Bengals do get Chase signed long term to go with Burrow, how do you build a Defense to get that Offense back to The Super Bowl. It's not that Bengals don't score in 2024, it's that they give up too many points.

OK, Your Turn. How should The Brown Family and close to a GM Tobin go about getting better D Players in here for 2025 ???

Just like I called, here's a thread about how somehow Anarumo isn't the problem.

The Bengals had a below average defense in 2021.
-18th overall regular season (350.8 yards per game)
-17th scoring regular season (22.1 points per game)

Then in the postseason they just got really timely turnovers. They allowed 356.5 yards per game in the postseason, so it wasn't that they suddenly played significantly better, they just got a lot of timely turnovers to prevent some points. They had 9 takeaways and 1 giveaway in 4 games... after having 21 takeaways and 21 giveaways in 17 regular season games. That postseason run was never a sustainable result.

The Bengals have had a below average defense in 5 of Anarumo's 6 years. HE IS NOT A GOOD DC.

In 2021 and 2022 the defense was technically sound. They were in the right place and tackled. They didn't have the greatest pass rush those years either. These last two years the secondary is lost and they still have no pass rush to help.

If the Bengals fix the IOL, that improves the running game, gives Joe more time in the pocket, and keeps the defense off of the field, making them look better.

Having an enforcer style linebacker would be nice as well, to punish the RB's instead of being punished by them and make receivers pay for going over the middle.

ADG tried to be that enforcer against the Steelers.  Didn't work out too well

The thing that kept Lou around was the fact that he always seemed to confuse Patrick Mahomes.

But it's time to make a change.

He's even a one trick pony. If he's not getting sacks, he's providing nothing... And he's not getting sacks when it matters most.

I think the Brown/Blackburn family won't bring back Lou just knowing how many fans they'd piss off.

I'm just afraid that they'd just promote someone from the coaching staff now instead of doing the work to go find someone more experienced and more qualified.

Duke and Lou are the epitome of the Spiderman meme with the 2 Spidermen pointing at each other.

I imagine the conversation between Duke and Lou going something like this:

Duke: You’re Fired!!! You’re wasting the all the amazing talent I get for you. All these great draft picks I make are not getting developed.

Lou: Fuhgeddaboudit. You keep drafting crappy players and let Jesse Bates walk. I told you it would be a dark day if he left…

Duke: No. The players I give you are great, you’re not developing them

Lou: No. You give me lemons, and there is only so much Lemonade I can make

Duke/Lou: Well maybe it's neither of our fault. Let’s both keep our jobs and pretend like it never happened and HOPE for better next year

We never had a SB defense. We had an average defense that caught lightning in a bottle and got timely turnovers.

Then, we lost several of our best players. We replaced them with poor players.

The rest of our players aged.

Now we have a bad defense at every level.

We also never really had a great defensive scheme. And with bad players, that's exposed.

Replace the entire D minus Trey. Our zone D has been getting gashed since Marvin left. Pretty sad when the D will stop a 3rd or 4th & 1 more than 3rd & long.

Honestly the linebacker play has been terrible.
Dropped off a cliff.

Can’t generate enough of a pass rush.

Not strong enough or deep enough up front to stop the run and generate pressure.

Not disciplined enough or smart enough to play with good structure as a group on the second and third level.

Poor pursuit angles at times tackling from linebackers and secondary.

Honestly the whole defense just looks lost at times.
Inexperience is definitely a factor.

Not enough high end talent at linebacker, corner, or safety.

The fix is to add more picks to the pass rush.
Draft a lockdown corner.
Draft an elite linebacker that can defend the run, pass, and rush the passer.

With all of this said I’ve seen Bill Belicheck put together dominant defensive performances with lesser talent than we have on defense.
If you hired him and added a lockdown corner and another pass rush weapon they would be good again.

What’s wrong with the Bengals, it easier to say what’s right with the Bengals. Hendricks is right and everything else on defense is wrong, no ifs ands or buts.

New coaching on the D. I liked Lou but he needs to go.

However, isn't it the scouting department and GM who give the coordinator the tools to work? And the GM is MB in reality. We are screwed

They gave him tools in the 2020 and 2021 free agency... More than they've ever given any other coordinator in Cincinnati.

I'll add to what Baltimore Ravens players said when Bengals let Bates and others leave.  They said there goes the Bengals Defense.

In 2021, the Bengals had good DT's, but not now.  The LBs played better.  The DBs are a joke compared to 2021.

Collinsworth said covering Bengals on Sunday Night Game,  Hendrickson is good, but he can't do it alone.  Others on Defense need to do their jobs.

I think Bengals need to hit Defense in Free Agency and the Draft hard.  Say adios to a lot of the D players they have. Bring in D Players who get the job done in the NFL.  George Allen use to trade all his draft picks for NFL veterans, but Paul Brown never did, nor will his family.

Oh, someone mentioned Marvin Lewis, so I have to point out the Bengals were awful on Defense his last few years here, and just an awful team.  Of course some of that is who The Brown Family and Tobin got rid of in players and their awful draft picks that Lewis said he had little control of.   I hope Mike Brown and Family haven't gone back to not listening to coaches on players, because The Brown Family are good lawyers, but they don't know much about football.

Whoever the D Coach is, the Bengals need DT's, more Edge rushers, Help at LB, and much more talent at CB and Safety.  In short, they need a complete rebuild of new players on Defense. All the money can't go into the Offense.  They will have to spend some money on Defense if they want to get out of last place and return to the Play-Offs under Burrow in future years.

Tony Dungy, the Defensive Guru at Tampa and Indy, always preached adding Speed to the Defense.  Bengals should keep that in mind as they rebuild this awful Defense.

NO, the Bengals do not have good players and it is all the coach.  That would be too easy.  The fact is The Bengals have lousy players on Defense across the board, except for Hendrickson.  The Bengals do NOT have quality players on Defense, in fact, they stink.

I'll also add The Bengals defense is at it's worst against quarterbacks who can also run.  The Bengals in those Nickle and Dime packages 80 % of the game get killed by running QB's such as Jackson. Hurst, Wilson.  I'm forced to think being in the Nickle or Dime 80 % of the game is the worst way to defend quarterbacks who can run.  I have heard announcers say you have  to be aggressive and get in their backfield, because a QB like Jackson will just killl that Nickle Package Defense, The Bengals do OK against slow pocket quarteerbacks, but running quarterbacks eat Bengals alive all game long.

Bengals sit back in Prevent Defenses most of the game.  Basketball coach Bobby Knights take on football prevent defense was, the only thing it prevents is victory. That the best way to lose is to go into the Prevent Defenses.  Coach Taylor has always believed his team should have 5 or 6 DB's on the field 80 % of the game, but Lemar Jackson keeps proving that is the wrong defense to stop him. Same goes for all other QB's who can run as well as pass. They eat that Prevent up all game. It's just not aggressive enough. The only way Coach Taylor using 5 DB's might work, is if one of those DB's is the size of a LB and hits like a LB.   Bates could kind of do that, and Taylors Nickle D has struggled without a LB / DB like Bates.

OK, now back to other peoples opinions on this Defense.  I will repeat, it is too easy to say Bengals have the players and all they need is a new D Coach.  Actually, most of these D players are awful.  Most of these D Players need fired, but getting Quality Replacements is The Hard Part. Still, Tony Dungy went from team to team rebuilding Defenses, and look what Harbaugh has done quickly with The Chargers Defense, so it can be done. You do need a Warren Sapp type at DT, and Bengals don't have a Monster at DT that other teams fear.

Of course if the Bengals Defense gets rebuilt good again, will Mike Brown pay them ?   The never ending problem as long as Mike Brown is alive and running this team now in his 4th decade as owner.

We don't need anything special more than we have at LB, they just need for their coaches to demand that they break down and tackle and wrap the legs. That's it. It's really that simple.

As we witnessed on Sunday, those high torso tackle attempts simply don't work and even lead to inadvertent grabs of the facemask, while the ball carrier spins and fights for more yardage.

But what were the quality of the tools?  It doesn't matter how many if the quality is awful.
