Hendrickson, Reader, Ogunjobi, Hilton, Awuzie, Apple, Bell. By and large that's a huge infusion of talent. The problem is that Anarumo has had time and several drafts of which to select, develop and elevate new players to grow into those roles. He's not getting it done.

Reader, Trey, Awuzie, Vonn Bell, Mike Hilton... It feels like Mike Zimmer could've used a similar haul back in say 2012?

The Bengals had a below average defense in 2021.
-18th overall regular season (350.8 yards per game)
-17th scoring regular season (22.1 points per game)

Then in the postseason they just got really timely turnovers. They allowed 356.5 yards per game in the postseason, so it wasn't that they suddenly played significantly better, they just got a lot of timely turnovers to prevent some points. They had 9 takeaways and 1 giveaway in 4 games... after having 21 takeaways and 21 giveaways in 17 regular season games. That postseason run was never a sustainable result.

The Bengals have had a below average defense in 5 of Anarumo's 6 years. HE IS NOT A GOOD DC.

Bingo
I have been saying that also. Only one year average, and the rest at the bottom of the barrel.
They play bend don’t break, and hope to get a turnover to stop the drive. That is no way to play football in the NFL.

Lou doesn't draft players; that's on Duke!

To the OP; the problem with this defense is lack of Athlectisim and lack of playmakers. You can tell its also a unit that doesn't trust each other and doesn’t communicate well with each other. (To be clear that's on Duke)

I'm not saying that Duke is guilt free, the question that I responded to asked about the quality of tools that Anarumo was given to work with.  Also, if you don't think that coaches have input into the draft, I feel like you're sadly mistaken. Take a look at the "war room" camera shots during the next draft.

The entire unit is bullcrap and the head of this non-venomous snake is a guy who cut his teeth at the US Merchant Marine Academy.

The entire thing is a reset. Fire them all.

Lou might have say but he isn't the one that is pulling the trigger on the draft picks and he isn't the one that is letting go Reader and Bates in free agency.

Allowing Reader to move on should not have even been an issue by this season. Lou and his assistants had years to coach up guys like Tupou and Falele. They failed to develop anyone to take over for DJ.

You're right, but it's not too difficult to escape Trey when no one else is getting pressure in crucial situations. Just roll the QB to the right and he's neutralized.

So my question is :  Bengals had a Super Bowl Defense in 2021, so what happened ?   Who is gone ?  How do they rebuild this Defense ?

I'll say I don't think the D Coach is the problem, he was part of the Super Bowl season.  I have to think the Front Office got rid of too many D Players.

Again, here is the problem.  If Bengals do get Chase signed long term to go with Burrow, how do you build a Defense to get that Offense back to The Super Bowl.  It's not that Bengals don't score in 2024, it's that they give up too many points.

OK, Your Turn.   How should The Brown Family and close to a GM Tobin go about getting better D Players in here for 2025 ???

Bengals did not have a great defense the year they went to the Superbowl.....there are  too many issues with this team..from top to bottom ..but some new voices are necessary in that locker room..Lou has to go  along with 2-3 others

What do you mean by that? It should have been obvious that the Bengals loaded up on defensive free agents that offseason as a short term fix to support their young offense, and allow time to draft and develop defensive players in house. The plan was to keep the nucleus of the high powered offense together with big contracts and allow the defense to survive without a steady infusion of big free agent money each year. They failed, hardly any of those defensive picks have developed into anything worth granting a second contract to. The holes are still there, and as the bills for the offensive talent are coming due, the defense still can't stand on it's own two feet.

Anarumo was trusted with not only utilizing the outside talent brought in, but also with development of young drafted players. He blew it. Time to get his ass out of town. Sure, many of us would like to see Duke go with him, but I think that we're all smart enough to know that isn't likely to happen. Who in the hell that is better at Dukes job than Duke is would be willing to come and work a not-actual "GM" role with all of the heavy handed oversight and financial constraints that the Bengals management make Duke operate under??

I'm just afraid that they'd just promote someone from the coaching staff now instead of doing the work to go find someone more experienced and more qualified.

Yep.   The great thing about this strategy is that promoting low-level coaches doesn't cost you as much as bringing someone with experience does.   The fans will never know what we had to pay for them either!  Win! Win!

As we witnessed on Sunday, those high torso tackle attempts simply don't work and even lead to inadvertent grabs of the facemask, while the ball carrier spins and fights for more yardage.

Our tackling has been atrocious. Last week was the worst I've seen for a while. I don't think I've ever seen a defense as sloppy as ours last week. Missed tackles, over pursuits, lack of speed, etc. You name it, they displayed it. We had guys flying all over the place with no discipline or focus. This defense is made in China!

Coaches have to have some input on players drafted. I find it hard to believe that Duke Tobin and his clowns do all the work of determining who to select in the draft. That would be comical, if true.

Thinking that a 4th rd bust and an undrafted free agent can replace a top 5 player at his position is laughable.

Yep, it was like the Bengal defenders were controlled by ATARI and the Steeler offense was the All-Madden team.
