Poll : What Is Wrong With Bengals Defense 2024 ???

(Yesterday, 08:18 PM)kevin Wrote: Now we get back to Mike Brown having the smallest and the cheapest scouting staff in the NFL.  The Bengals scouting staff is a joke compared to other NFL teams. Hell, for years Bengals drafted off that Cincinnati drug store guys list, not a scout, a dude in a drug store, and the picks were awful.   Lack of scouting has killed the Bengals under the 4 decades of Mike Brown.  You can't pick draft picks out of a magazine list, teams need scouts to actually evaluate players.  Also The Combine is over rated because it is Track and Field, not Football.  Bengals scouting of College games is next to Zero.  OK, they do The Senior Bowl and The Combine, but that isn't enough.  AND THIS CAUSES AWFUL DRAFT PICKS.

Maybe with the college playoffs, the Bengals will have a better opportunity to scout top players on the nation's top teams. If the scouting staff is so small, and the senior bowl and Combine are over-rated, at least now that the playoffs will coincide with the Bengals being out of it for this season, they can at least focus on scouting some of the top players being showcased in the playoffs. Better than, as you say, depending on lists produced by others.

Yes, it won't help them find gems on non-playoff teams, but if they're picking from the top 12 teams in the nation, at least they can get first-hand impressions of many of the nation's top players. Send some of the Bengal's coaches to those Saturday games.

Don't get me wrong, I fully agree our scouting dept. is lacking, to say the least.

But I also agree with Goose or whoever said it our bigger problem is who/how our big board is being set up. In other words the list just isn't good/wrong players at top of want list.

How that is done??? MB calls the final list??? Tobin? ZT? Katie?? I don't know who or how it's getting set up?

We need a GM. Somebody who's setting up the board by himself with input of course but he has final say. I don't think that's happening now - see Carman.

Wasn't that a Mike Brown decision, based on his talk with Paul Alexander? Stuff like that shouldn't be happening.

I think it’s 50/50 on scouting and player development. All these players can’t be bad, or sports media, would have ripped a new one during the draft.

I say the two go hand in hand.   The Bengals Draft Big Board is often wrong because the Bengals have no Scouts or Personnel / Development Staff.  As said on here, The Bengals have 2, the Chiefs have around 15.....All other NFL Teams such as Baltimore have Scouts or Personnel / Development Staff....So On Draft Day, The Bengals have Mike Brown, Katie and Paul Brown Jr, a room of Family Lawyers that know little about Football.  Now Paul Brown knew Football, but he has been DEAD since 1991, which was the start of the 1990's Bungles. The apple having fallen too far from the tree.  Paul Brown knew Football, not this room full of Lawyers, which is all they are....As usual Mike Brown and Family are way behind the rest of the NFL.  The rest of the NFL goes into Draft Day with a large team of Scouts or Personnel / Development setting up their Big Board, and Mike Brown refuses to.  Instead Mike Brown hires every Family person named Brown or Blackburn to keep all the money in The Family.  It matters not to Mike Brown that his Family of Lawyers know little about Football.  So of course their Big Board is Wrong more often than not.  Such as drafting a weight lifter who had never really played football, and thinking he could be an Offensive Guard, which never panned out.  So many Mike Brown Family weird Draft moves that never panned out.

So Bengals need to improve this awful defense.  They need to use Free Agency and The Draft to rebuild The D Line, the Linebackers and The Defensive Backs.  From Front to Back, the Bengals Defense is a Disaster Area that needs bulldozed and Rebuilt.

The Problem Is,  Mike Brown would rather hire every single Family Member than hire some Football People.  The rest of the entire NFL hires Football People to set up The Draft, but not Mike Brown.  So cheap that Mike Brown for the longest time got his Draft Info from a guy working behind a counter of a Cincinnati Drug Store, and Fans thought that was great. Why have football people, just go down and ask a guy working at a Drug Store.  On Draft Day, Mike Brown and Family might as well just throw darts at names on a board, or pull names out of a hat......The rest of The NFL Teams are light years ahead of Mike Brown and Family, because all the other teams have Scouts and Personnel / Development Football People, and the Bengals refuse to.  No, Mike Brown would rather hire every Family Member who went to Law School, and keep the Money in The Family, even if they end up in Last Place most of the years under Mike Brown.

Oh Yes, Football People could come in here and scout players better and have a far better Draft Board to get far better players.  But Mike Brown isn't going to pay for that. ....So as All The Other NFL Teams go into The Draft with Scouts or Personnel / Development large staffs of Football People,  Mike Brown as always goes against all the other NFL teams, and tries to do a Draft with Mike Brown, Katie, and Paul Brown Jr....A team of Family Lawyers who are not and will never be Football Experts.....Which is OK by Mike Brown, because he is keeping The Money in The Family, even if it means Last Place....I really don't think Mike Brown cares that much about winning. not like his Dad did.  I think Mike Brown is happy to lose as long as everybody on his staff is named Brown or Blackburn and they keep All the Money in The Family.

Do they need a new Defense, Yes.....Does Mike Brown have the staff to fix the Defense, No He Doesn't, and Never Will as long as he is alive.  For if the other 31 Teams have Scouts and Personnel / Development, Mike Brown always has to be the guy that goes against what the other 31 teams are doing.

I'll say this about Hall Of Fame Paul Brown.  He always surrounded himself with Football People.  His son Mike Brown refuses to. Again, Mike Brown has 2 Personnel / Development and The Chiefs and most NFL teams have many on staff.  So I again say THIS is why the Bengals Draft Big Board is always way off.  My word, Mike Brown even use to get Draft Advice from a guy that worked behind the counter of a Cincinnati Drug Store, and that's pretty cheap and pretty bad.

For a long time Baltimore had NFL player Ozzie Newsome and his football people working their free agency and draft.  Can you see the advantage that would give them over Mike, Katie and Paul Brown Jr room of Cincinnati Lawyers.  I'm sorry to say Mike, Katie and Paul Brown Jr are probably the last people that can fix this Defense.  I'm also sorry to say that this situation will not improve until Mike Brown dies of old age, and maybe not even then.  The sad news is that there are good Football People they could hire and there are good Football Players they could bring in, but not as long as Mike Brown is alive and owner of this team.

Lou needs to go! AFC North teams know our defense better than we do. Pitt and Baltimore scored on almost every possession they had when we played them. Cleveland was moving the ball against us with Watson until he got hurt. Would not be surprised if both Cleveland and Pitt scored over 30 on us when we play them again. We couldn't beat them last year either. Only Cleveland last year last game of the year that meant nothing. Now the rest the league knows our D. Our scheme is terrible. This current staff has also never developed anyone. I will give you Wilson, Pratt and CTB. Hubbard and Bates was here before they got here and performed well. Everyone else was brought in from another team whose staff developed them. Lou also refuses to play the young guys and develop them. Case in point Dax Hill. You draft a guy to replace a player who is very good and in his first year you let him play many positions in the secondary. Then you start him at safety and he has an up and down year playing next to another safety who just wasn't very good. That safety is replaced by a rookie who plays really well. Lou said it was communication that was the reason they were having trouble. You bring in Stone and Bell, who was just cut by worse team in the league, and state your problems are corrected. Only problem its worse than last year. People said Dax had trouble covering people but somehow moved to corner and became our best coverage corner. Bell was finally replaced by Battle after it was discovered that Bell has lost a step and the communication problems wasn't fixed. Maybe playing Hill and Battle was your best option after all. The only reason the rookies are playing on the d line is because Hill and Rankins have been hurt most the year. Hubbard is hurt and still plays more snaps than Murphy. CTB developed some sort of mental problem in the offseason and Wilson along with Money Mac traded their balls for marriage. Meanwhile Pratt and Hilton thinks there isn't much of an issue on D. Now Lou comes out and says Stone is his guy. He's giving 100%. Boy I hope that doesn't mean the rest aren't. Note: Stone is one of the worst rated safeties in the NFL
