Juan Soto

To the Mets

15yr/$765m with zero of it deferred, escalators to potentially make it $800m.

MLB club finances are broken and the commissioner is constantly trying to ruin the game with changes to try and bring in the TikTok generation. Dark times for fans of 25 of the 30 teams.

Insane for sure.

There's a work stoppage coming in a couple of years that will probably cost a whole season...but something's gotta give. Things are out of control right now. The big markets can't keep being allowed to control the game and continually dominate free agency. They have to find a way to bring some semblance of parity and fairness to the sport.

The Commissioner used the term 'competitive balance' against the Reds in '78. Nowadays it doesn't matter.

For sure !!

As we all know there's like a half dozen top of the market teams that the rest just can't compete with. Some kind of parity has to be built in, or it just makes no sense.

It's just the top dogs and the rest are just extended farm teams.

Yep. Some crazy context laid out by Mo Egger...

'Juan Soto’s new contract is worth $765,000,000.

The Reds’ Opening Day payroll from 2017 through 2024 combined adds up to $788,433,455

Take this information and do what you want with it.'

The MLB needs a hard salary cap (not just a soft cap with a luxury tax component) and a salary floor.

There's no reason why, in 2024, 30 teams can't have approximately the same roster salary construction. It should be about how well you use your money, not who can buy the most free agents to force a WS win.

And the cash deferment stuff is infuriating too.

I've longed wish they would emulate the NFL model. We know the deal, the players union would never agree to it. The players love getting paid.

But if you paired it with a salary floor, then you'd be helping 90% of the players at the expense of the top 10%. I think the union could get behind that.

It's an insoluble trajectory. At this rate, you'll have players that have more money than some of the poverty franchise owners.

It's fun to wonder what baseball would be with a salary cap. The NFL is a cash machine that grows by leaps and bounds almost every year. Even fans of shitty teams are addicted to the idea that any situation can be turned around with a good draft or two. Nobody can build a mega-team and everyone has to spend money, to some extent.

The farce of a few franchises stacking up All Star teams is kind of an insult to fans, but no more so than the teams who cry poor and collect TV revenue. It's time to break it so it can be viable again. Hopefully a yearlong work stoppage doesn't destroy too much interest in the game.

This is why I lost interest in baseball years ago. I still cheer for the Reds to do well, but they will never be able to compete with the big market teams like this.
