Let’s Talk Pollack; Again
#1
We talk about development and the lack thereof from positions across the team.

But I do see development on th Oline. If you look deep enough.

Mims, Ford (at LT) Lee, Kirkland, and even Cochran.

I like the run blocking scheme and I even like the run game.

Pass blocking is the issue and likely what will get him fired. But from a development standpoint he’s had a good year. And deserves some acknowledgment. From his harshest critics, myself included. We have a top passer, top receiver, and a breakout year at RB.

Is his job safer than what we may think?

There are a lot of plays that are left out on the field from bad blocking. Whether it's a lack of athleticism, not holding a block long enough or guys just being done.

The video of Mims in another thread is rife with so many missed yards in the running game and it's not like that's the only one...

I see good things for Mims going forward. We actually got something out our first round pick. Things you see that he can improve with you can easily write off as rookie lessons.

He barely started college games and has survived outings with top rushers all season. I give Pollack props for getting him ready.

I love what I have seen from Orlando Brown and Mims this year but both were polished technically when they got here. Both Volson
and Cappa have sucked this season. I like what I saw from Cochran against the Titans but it was one game. I am not ready to give
Pollack any props, Burrow gets hit a lot still and our run blocking is pretty bad. Chase Brown only needs one big hole and he will take
it the distance if a Safety or LB misses an angle and we haven't seen this yet which is crazy to me.

Also, like Rfaulk said, we don't bring in athletic OL either besides Mims. I like physical OL, but we need a balance.

I guess if there is a pass for Pollack it is the constant Shotgun and not running the ball enough that sabotages his OL.

He sucked at developing talent before but he’s got good play out of some disregarded players at key positions so maybe he’s turned a page….

We got 12 (out of 28) games from our starting tackles with the same ol' IOL and still have better pass blocking than last year.
The run game (personnel, blocking, and formation) has been sacrificed at the altar of Joe Burrow; I don't blame Pollack for that.
Players only get promoted or developed due to injury, but that's the whole team.
Not knowing who he pounds the table for he's not on my naughty list this year.

Burrow gets hit "only" 6 and 8 times in wins against shitty teams, and we get a thread where we erase that the 3 weeks before that players recorded 38 QB Hits against Burrow.

This is just like earlier in the year when people were like "yay, the defense is fixed!" after the Giants and Browns game.

I think the development of players (for me anyway) is based off of more than the wins.

Cochran you may not be able to count based off of him only starting 1 game, but he others have shown promise. I think. We can find fault in any Coach, Burrow is going to get hit a lot. It’s his style of play.

It’s hard for me to call for heads on offense given the breakout years it produced, and with there being some signs of development on the Oline I’m no longer sold Pollack is gone.

I mean let’s be honest. Fans barely miss Orlando Brown. With Ford starting. There’s no panic or hopes for him to return around here at this key moment in the season. This may not be the year for fans to turn their ire on Pollack. I think he’s coached well this season.

I think that it was the hallowed Paul Alexander that once stated, "I can't work on technique in season, we've got next week's protections and executions to work on". So no, I do not think that Pollack has "improved" anyone during the season. Cody Ford had a lot of potential coming out of Oklahoma, he's just now blossoming into what he could have been from the beginning. Cochran showed some good scruff, but teams don't have much tape on him. I like him, hopefully he can continue to develop. As far as Mims goes, he's just operating off of what he learned at UGA and progressing it forward.

Yeah, the Tackle position looks to be in decent shape, but in true Mike Brown fashion the interior is a collection of has-beens and never were's.

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

I can assure you the coaches do. They’ve had to give the OT’s a ton of help with Orlando out.

Could have sworn it was Jim Turner who said he couldn’t teach during the season.

May have been, but the premise holds true. OL coaches are consumed with weekly activities in season.

It was Pollack who said he couldn't teach during the off-season.

How many ppg with Ford starting LT? Has the offense really gotten worse.

Who’s gotten worse? He hasn’t developed drafted or undrafted players until now. But has anyone really gotten worse. Except maybe in pff eyes. Browns always secretly had his ups and downs. That’s why he could never stick anywhere. Karras was rumored to be best at guard, and kappa was only really known for blocking for Brady and trying to ply on a broken leg.

We complain about developing players but I’ve seen development in Oline players this season. Young and old.individually if not collectively.

Eh, I’m indifferent towards Pollack at this point. The real problem has always been Duke. He can’t draft trenches to save his life. The OL specifically has been a problem since 2016. That’s a long time in NFL years to not get things straightened out.

Bengals 2023 pp w/ Tee: 20.3
Bengals 2023 ppg w/o Tee: 24.4

Bengals 2023 ppg w/ Burrow: 20.2
Bengals 2023 ppg w/o Burrow: 23.4

Bengals 2022 ppg w/ Chase: 25.5
Bengals 2022 ppg w/o Chase: 28.0

Clearly we should just cut Tee, and Burrow, and Chase and get even better on offense. It doesn't matter who we played when they were out vs when they were in, or any other circumstances like the traditional Taylor shitty start to seasons. We scored more points when they were out, so clearly we're better without them. PPG says it's so.

It’s not really about it being worse. It’s just another thing the coaches have to worry about with the game plan. Hell, Drew Sample had a pass blocking grade of 35.7 against the Titans. That has to be one of his worst ever. He obviously wouldn’t have to help chip as much with Orlando playing.
