Bengals re-sign Mike Gesicki
(Yesterday, 10:59 PM)Ell Prez Wrote: When you have the highest paid QB, highest paid WR, highest paid WR2, a DE who needs to get paid, need 2 OG, 1 more DE and DT, need CB1….can we really afford a TE? Should we afford a TE? We don’t know the structure so you cant say it’s a $5m cap hit. Even if it is, we have much bigger needs. This scares me that they don’t think they’ll be able to sign all big 3.

Based on the moves and what has been said/written, Bengals first priority is continuity on offense. The second priority is rebuilding the defense.

It seems that if one is confused or has questions about the second priority, they should be referred to the first priority.

Also, as of today, there is nothing much that can be done to address the second priority. Can't sign a FA, execute a trade or draft a player. Our own FA defensive talent is not very good.

If it is a matter of saving cap space, then I refer you back to the first priority.

Plus, if there are good players to be had on Defense we have to wait till it is legal to grab them up. IE the start of FA.

Still want Jonathan Allen and would be fine with bringing back BJ Hill, but we don't know what we can get in FA. Good to keep our options open.

We also need to have workouts to see how certain players are physically.

Gesicki wasn't expensive for what he could bring to the table this season after now having chemistry with Burrow.

Cannot understand anyone disliking this extension of all the ones that have happened so far.

Compensation update: The #Panthers are re-signing TE Tommy Tremble to a two-year deal worth up to $16 million, including $8M guaranteed, per source.

In 61 career games, tremble has 85 catches 782 yards and 9 touchdowns. Thats on 131 targets

In 17 games with the bengals, 83 targets for 65 catches, 665 yards and 2 TD.

Tremble is only 24… but seems like this is where average, or below, TE contracts will be headed and Mike is certainly ahead of tremble in ability.

Gesicki is cheap compared to Tremble then. I know Mike is way older, but Tremble sure doesn't have much production for a TE with that
many games under his belt. Still think Mike G is going to have his best season ever this year now that he has chemistry with Joey B as well.

Another one and the same ballpark. Almost identical stats to Mike.

he Commanders are re-signing TE Zach Ertz, source confirms.

One-year, $6.25 million deal. Could reach $9 million with incentives (
@TomPelissero
1st).

Not a surprise Ertz is back, but a big move regardless. Huge RZ target for Jayden Daniels last season.

I think he's considered a blocking specialist TE (who also plays a lot of ST), so comparing his receiving numbers to TEs who don't block at all or play ST is always going to look skewed.

Also worth noting that just because Carolina paid someone that much money doesn't mean it's a good idea or worth emulating. I would be upset if we had a 24-year-old Drew Sample hitting FA and he got that deal.

He's a good TE.  I like this.  Bengals have been changing TE every year, and that's not good for Burrow.  TE is the Bread and Butter play.  The timing has to be Bang, Bang though. Gesicki reminds me of Hurst.  Hurst would fight for the extra yards or 1st down and full of Team Spirit To Win the Game, and Gesicki is a good hands catching TE like that.  The Bengals like their other TE's also and think Gandy is great, but Bengals went back to Gesicki as they won games end of season.  Sample, Hudson, Gandy, but the best TE Bengals had was Gesicki. Bengals may argue that, but they know it and it's why they resigned him. If it's 3rd down, which TE do you want getting the ball to get a 1st down, and it's easily Gesicki over Bengals other TE's.

Nate, I like Allen as well. We need a veteran presence who is also a locker room leader, to help Jenkins, Murphy, Jackson and the incoming draft picks all gel together.

But I can't help but to feel that Bengals may go with a younger vet. Milton Williams would be the prize and we should expect us to get him - especially if we lose Trey.

Hill and Hilton are FA's. Bringing them back could help, depending on one's opinion of the players.

FWIW, those ere our two highest rated defenders, per PFF, outside of Hendrickson.

Call me silly, but letting 2 of your best 3 defenders walk and trading the best defender doss not seem like a great start in rebuilding the defense.

Of course, we are not there yet, but that is what it looks like.

Quote:"Everybody's goal in Cincinnati is to compete for a championship, and that's another reason I wanted to come back,' said Gesicki, expected to sign a deal as soon as Monday for what reports say is $25.5 million and what he calls "a life-changing day for me and my family."

"The Bengals have done some incredible things for me and I'm grateful to Mike Brown, Katie (Blackburn) and the front office for getting together and getting something done."

Quote:"It's been, 'Prove it, prove it, prove it.' I just wanted to get in the right situation with a coach that believes in me and a quarterback that believes in me and I found that in Cincinnati," Gesicki said. "With Zac and Joe, why go anywhere else?"

Quote:"I'll be forever indebted to Joe Burrow and what he's done for my career and how he's talked about me," Gesicki said. "I've said from day one. He's one of one and that's a big reason I wanted to come back to Cincinnati."

All hopes turn to next year

I think this is a positive move. It isn't just Gesicki's numbers, it is when he put them up. He kept us in games at crucial moments. If you want two TE sets (12 personnel) then this was the right move. If you are concerned about the talent falloff at WR after Ja'Marr and Tee (especially in light of Burton being a locker room and offfield liability whose roster spot should go to anyone else), then this was also the right move.
