Happy Tampering Day
Can't go into the draft with friggin Cordell Volson and Cody Ford as your planned starting Guards.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs

Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Or Jaxson Kirkland, though I do think he would have been starting at guard before midseason

Ya never know, Kirkland could become the next Becton. (without all of the fanfare of being an early first round pick, of course)

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

They always think they have the answer in-house, when someone plays relatively well at the end of the season. Then that player falls on their face and they realize they need to upgrade so they talk a good game. Except, by then, they have a new player who played well at the end of the season, so they think they have the answer in-house.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Also, Pratt, Volson, and Stone are all conspicuously NOT cut.  They can make room relatively easily.

Those three are not really obvious cut candidates, though.  None are so highly paid that they couldn't be kept as backups so they can play into the comp pick formula next year.  Pratt and Stone would not be terribly cheap to get upgrades for, either.

I disagree.  That may be the case in early free agency, but the guys out there now aren't going to be bank-breaking signings.  They'll mostly be one year prove-it deals.  Almost 200 guys have signed at this point.  Maybe more.

Pratt is making 7 or 8, Stone is 6, I think and Volson is close to 3 mil.  You can work with that if you really need to squeeze some money out of them.

Take away one pressing need in the offensive line and then address defense in the draft and a guard if the board falls right. At this point I think we have to trade back in the 1st. Normally seems unlikely but I don't know how we fill these holes with 6 picks.

You cannot. That is just another reason why the Big 3 deals + Joe's restructure needed done prior to FA frenzy. We could have signed a couple more guys.

However, if we land Jenkins, I think we can come close. At least on the big ones.

Big needs: starting G, DE, pass rushing DT.
Moderate needs: TE1, S
Would be nice: CB1, LB2, OT depth, slot WR, RB

If you buy Burks, then LB2 is not really a priority. You can argue Perine takes RB off the board. Ditto with Gesicki & slot WR. Not saying I do, stick with me.

Take those off the board and whatcdo you have? G, DT/3T, DE (probably Day 1-2 picks)
S, TE (maybe higher if the board falls right)
CB/OT depth

That is 7 picks. If we can land 2 Ga, or a G + another spot in FA, then it gets easier.

They cut 2 guys so far Cappa and Rankins. Forced one into retirement Hubbard so not so sure your analalgy is valid in 2025. When was the last time the team cleared 30 million in cap space before FA started>

I will answer, it is NEVER.

That has nothing to do with not signing a somewhat proven guard, while having Volson, Kirkland and Ford as the current top options.

I am as frustrated as most are we have yet to address guard. It is day 2 of FA and I have not given up hope. There are some proven vets abailable, all better than Cappa who started every game in 2024 and was beyond bad, Ford and Volson.

I will be more frustrtaed to start seeing Jenkins, Becton (ain't over til it over), Risner, Scherff, Hernandez and others sign elsewhere.

I disagree with fans who think we do not have the cap. The Ravens created more cap today from a restructure of Humphrey adding voiding years to his contract (pushing th cap to later years). The Bengals have a ton of room to create more cap space and if they don't use all the available tools they are foolish.

Not over yet, so I will reserve judgement when the Bengals head to training camp in late July so be able to debate their off season once it has ended for the most part.

Volson made 985K last year, and basically doubled his salary with the Incentive Program. So less than 2 million

Looks like there is rumblings of Brandon Scherff.

Let’s see if this plays out.

Scherff makes sense given the relationship with the new Oline coach. Just not sure if he has enough left in the tank.

If they could get Teven and Scherff, that would be a win. Just Scherff would be meh. Scherff as your”weak spot” would be a good problem.
