I agree. We needed a Vet. Did we need to spend 16m on (an over the) Hill?
This screams exactly what Tobin said he learned the issue was (holding on to those SB vets).
Also with 12m to MG and 16m to Hill we are dangerously close to what Tobin stated he didn't want. The same roster as 2024 (not including the draft) just more expensive.

Right now the big issue with the DT room is inexperience. Jenkins and Jackson both missed time last year and both were rookies. Hill is after signing the only experienced player. The other issue is our room is currently all 3Ts. We lack a NT. Our 2 rookies both flashed good play so both are keepers for now but we need to add a big, powerful NT.

I originally thought we overpaid, but looking around at craziness, I was wrong.
We have the vet with 2 rookies now on the roster so no longer an urgent need.
Please use 2025 free agency to fix the trenches, not the draft!!!!!!!!

This is probably our biggest FA resign outside of the big 3 in trey, tee and jamarr.
Mike g, then this.
Great value as well.
I feel either Tee or Trey will sign a contract with us by the end of the wek.

It's still a VERY weak room.

It's still strange that some of the same people who have been on here for years keep imagining players values at last year's prices, year after year.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

BJ Hill is making about the same money he did 2 years ago.
IMO he was overpaid 2 years ago. Now he's almost underpaid.

Luckily, DT (especially the 1st and 2nd round) probably the strongest position in this draft class to add another (or two).
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs
Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Counting on a lot of rookies/unproven players at the moment to make up 1/2 (maybe more if Trey is moved) of the defensive line.
Just not ideal.

Good signing, BJ is a very solid DT tweener type. He keeps our DT room from being terrible and if Jenkins and McKinnley can develop and we
add a stud next to BJ we will be much better than last season.

How do players become proven without giving them a chance to prove themselves?
In fact, the Chiefs implored this strategy a few ago when they rolled out the 2022 draft class.
Trent McDuffie, George Karlaftis, Leo Chenal, and Isaiah Pacheco really jumped in to fill critical gaps for that team.
I'm not the biggest fan of the DL they got, but they invested early draft picks and those guys need some more playing time if we want to get anything out of their rookie deals.
I personally think any of the DL in Rd 1 this year would upgrade over Jenkins, Jackson, and Murphy.
And depending on how the remaining cap ends up, any FA they bring in for DT may not really be much better than Jenkins and Jackson.

Some players are content to accept less money than they can get on the open market because they are happy with the team they are on; they like where they live and don't want to relocate their families. I, for one, and happy that he's still here. He's undervalued by many fans, but not I. You never have to worry about a guy like BJ not giving 100% of his effort. He sets a good example for the young DTs to follow.

The appeal to bring back any part of that 2024 defense is fairly low for me, but Hill is decent.

The Bengals desperately need starters across the DL and BJ Hill brings a consistent level of average... but this does not move the needle.
