Can you follow up on the Lions signed Hernandez post you made. I am still not seeing it reported on by National sites. Did he sign or was it a fan just saying he signed?

The more i look at Slayton the worse the signing becomes

He’s essentially so bad at pass rush he can only play on 1st and 2nd down and even then i could see most teams just checking to a pass when they see him in

Without more guys to rotate we are screwed

We kinda need Jenkins and Jackson to take a leap that no d lineman has taken on our team under Zac

I saw it on ig somewhere, then after you said you didn't see it...I searched the Internet and didn't get it.

Because I follow Pistons sites on ig, they give me Lions stuff.

But, it appears to NOT have happened.

With some guys getting $20 million, and guys like Hill getting $10...there's only so much you can do.

I have a sliver of hope that Jenkins and Jackson will take a few steps forward this year.  DT is a spot with a steep learning curve in the NFL.  Not many light the world on fire in year one.  Both looked good enough to have some hope at the end of the year.  Jackson was actually a lot better than I expected.

But year, we need better interior pass rush.

I don't think we're getting some elite run stopper.

But, he's likely better than the Lawrence Guys we signed off the street. He's also not DJ Reader.

Let's compare.

https://www.pff.com/news/pro-defensive-stops-a-more-comprehensive-metric-than-tackles

TJ Slaton (check qualifying players at the end of this post)
19 total stops last year, #26 (T 15th most)
8.6 stop%, #15 (T 11th highest)

DJ Reader (stops) percentage
'24 - (11) 5.1%
'23 - (18) 8.4%
'22 - (22) 10.5%
'21 - (26) 8.6%
'20 - (11) 10% (injured - 259 total snaps)
'19 - (30) 10%
'18 - (17) 5.6%
'17 - (22) 8.1%
'16 - (12) 5%

Stop percentage is the number of stops relative to the number of snaps played. Slaton's stop percentage was better or equal to Reader's 6 out of his 9 years.

I'm not saying Slaton is better than Reader. I'm also not saying he can't be better than Reader. I'm saying PFF "grades" are shit and metrics are way better. The metrics show that Slaton is a good player.

In 2023 Slaton played his most snaps (376 run snaps). He had 35 stops (#4 in the NFL) for a 9.5 stop% (#16 in the NFL). So his best year was better than Reader in total stops and better than 6 of 9 Reader years in percentage.

PS - 75-80 DL qualified on at least 50% of max snaps (for the entirety of Reader's career).

Anyone can hope.

Do you believe?

The whole point of that question is...try and find out how actually effective a player brought in could be, and how he relates to the better players at his position, before looking at his PFF "grade" and declaring he's probably not much of a replacement.  Wink
