The Chargers did have some good Defenders back in that time
Fred Dean was a modern day speed rusher at 235#
Louie Kelcher was a big run stuffing DT that could collapse the pocket and Gary "big hands " johnson was very good 3 t type of DT
DE Leroy jones wasnt too shabby either and was about 6'-7 "... but for one reason or another they couldnt make it to SB

I would say the big difference is that Burrow actually beat Mahomes a few times early in his career.
And Burrow has had more injuries as well.

But the overall team makeup is quite similar.

It took Manning a long time to win it all. 
His defense was never good enough--until it was, and they won a championship.

And here, all this time I thought that it was them getting Vinatieri that put them over the top..

Also, I think Manning had better lines most of the time.  Maybe not always loaded with superstars, but played well as a unit.  Also had a hellacious running back that was a star in his own right.

There are certainly differences. But they are investing in similar position groups. I think the colts had a lesser known back when they won the Super Bowl. Addai was a smaller back.

Burrow is a better qb in my opinion as well. Moves much better in the pocket and runs better.

I don't watch all of them. Usually just ones I think will be good matchups.
I also typically stop watching once the Bengals get eliminated from playoffs.

Watching a winning team is fun for me.
It's not fun to watch a continually losing team.
That's why I stop when if/when it gets to that point.


So, to your point, I do something that is fun to me and don't do it when it's not.

Definitely needs more talent infusion be it from the draft or free agency.

Part of my optimism for a better D this year is:
1) Early last season our DL was hit hard by the injury bug, Rankins, Hill, Jackson and Jenkins
2) Dax and Turner go down, season ending injuries
3) Wilson goes on IR
4) A lot of Rookies were getting a lot playing time, they showed they were rookies, but played well down the stretch
5) Slaton is being way underrated on here. Led the league for DTs for run stopping percentage
6) We will add some very good talent in the draft.

I believe this D will end up better than last year
