There certainly is something about driving like an absolute nut that falls within a blatant danger blind spot for young men. I recall being that age and sitting in a car with a group of friends while the driver went over 100 MPH for no reason without anyone even thinking anything other than it was neat. I was sitting there trying to not picture myself being maimed or killed and trying to not let it show that I was concerned while wondering if I was the only one in the vehicle who was anxious.  Are we all pretending this isn't terrifying, or am I the only one? Is the driver calm because he has the illusion that he's in control of the situation?

I remember friends saying that they drove crazy and/or drunk but it was ok because they were a good driver. Did that mean if you didn't drive like that you were scared or doubted your driving skills?

I also had a girlfriend a ways back who went to an extra podunk school in the country where everyone had to drive and there was this dude there who DUI/reckless driving killed more than one of his girlfriends, and he still managed to get dates.  I guess it's like the Deadman Curve or Last Kiss era where it's just pretty expected teens are going to drive and die. For a small town the number people I knew who didn't make it beyond their early 20s if that due to driving or suicide seems high in hindsight.

Oh, and that same girlfriend was watching some show about Amish people who become un-Amish, and it mostly centered around this group of 19-22 or so year old guys and one of them crazy-driving-crashed himself to death and at his memorial service his friends sat there and fondly told stories about the times he was driving like a total maniac and how awesome it was.  Pretty wacky, but not surprising.

Ok, I need to go do some yardwork I'm clearly putting it off.
