Reds March/April 2025 thread
To add to an earlier discussion, I think that they expect Hays to be the veteran leader and Lux to provide the "Championship Pedigree". It's just week two of year one in the Tito era. Expect some roster movement when they get closer to the trade deadline.

Definitely early in the season
The Reds have five hitters in the starting lineup hitting under .220 . . . the 8-1 Giants have four hitting under .220.
The Reds have three on the bench hitting .222 or less . . . the Giants have three on the bench with zero hits in 10 combined games played(a combined 0 for 22).

Jeeze, that's like 7 strikeouts in 7 innings tonight on balls 6"+ out of the strikezone.

I was a bit worried about Greene at the start of spring training this season but he's sure turned it around!! He's sure looking like a true ACE. With any run support he'd have at least one more win already.

Singer is looking like a solid pickup and a #2 or 3 type. I'm hoping Martinez is just getting his bad games out of the way early. Can Lodolo stay healthy? The talk is Abbott is near ready to return.

We could end up having a fairly solid starting pitching staff so all hope is not lost.

The question is can this offense get it together?

Lodolo vs. Roupp? tonight, RH and younger inexperienced pitcher with only 5 career starts. In his 1 start this season he earned a 6.75 ERA

Can our bats capitalize and steal another win?

Worth noting that those 2 previous non-Reds seasons he never made more than 10 starts in a season. 2024 was the first time he threw 120 innings in the majors since 2015. So a lot more batters are seeing him as he's currently on the longest consecutives appearances as a starter streak of his career since August 2015.

2022-present as SP: 3.75 ERA
2022-present as RP: 2.98 ERA
Career as SP: 4.58 ERA
Career as RP: 2.90 ERA

I'm a big Abbott fan. He gives me Mike Leake vibes for some reason.

Right now, I see Abbott taking Spiers's spot, but I am not ruling out Spiers or some other young dude ultimately taking Martinez's come May.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs

Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

McClain is a great talent. Unfortunately, he's looking very Senzel-ish at this point. Dude makes Tee Higgins look like Lou Gehrig.

REDS win their first series in 2025.  Payback on Giants.

I liked team walking off as Francona greeted them looking like a manager, this is what I was hoping for.

Lodolo had good game.  Steer is looking good.  So is Lux.  Ashcraft and Pagan did well.  Fraley did well.

As Reds walked off, I thought they were saying, " Tight Ship ".  another way of saying Team Baseball, or Team First.

The Giants ended up Reds'ing, going scoreless these past two games and Reds stealing two wins off just 3 runs.
That will help make up the difference, but man they need to get their bats going.
We can't expect these good pitching performances to last the whole year.

Oh yea I forgot about Lowder. Like what he did last year, so probably him for 5th spot if Martinez continues to disappoint...or possibly traded?

FOR SURE

But this is becoming a trend as well: They're a tough out vs. the good teams and even dominate some (Yankees, Astros) Then look like hammered crap vs. the cellar dwellers. IIRC there was a series in LA last season where they wolloped the Dodgers in the first two games and nearly swept them. Then turn around and get swept by the worst team in the majors and can't hit the ball past the pitchers mound.

The exception would be the Brewers - they're the Reds Steelers.

But yes they've got to get more consistent at the plate.

We're 3rd in the Majors with a 2.83 team ERA 1st in WHIP .094 - good news

23rd in team batting avg. .210    26th in OPS .608 - bad news
