SportingNews thinks we're going to sign Scherff, which would be HUGE and give me a lot of hope going into the draft and next season because I think we'd finally be able to offer Burrow some solid linemen to protect him and I have faith that Peters can coach our guys to be a solid unit.
Quote:In 2024, Scherff played in all 17 games for the Jaguars, and played all 1,013 of his snaps at right guard.
Scherff earned a 64.7 Pro Football Focus grade for his 2024 campaign. The guard excelled in pass protection, earning a 74.5 grade and not allowing a single sack. Scherff isn't as solid as a run-blocker, though, earning a 57.3 grade in that area.
However, Scherff's pass blocking prowess could fit perfectly in a pass-first offense like Cincinnati's. The Bengals also do have a major need at both guard spots this offseason, and Scherff is likely the best free agent option the team could get.
Alex Cappa, who started at right guard for the Bengals in 2024, was cut after a miserable season. Cody Ford was re-signed, and the veteran does have experience at both guard and tackle spots, but Ford struggled mightily in 2024.
The team would be wise to not rely on Ford to hold down a guard spot all season. The other guard currently penciled in to start is Cordell Volson, who has so far struggled in his NFL career.
Spotrac projects Scherff to land a one-year deal worth $6.7 million. Over the Cap has the Bengals sitting at around $26 million in cap space, so adding Scherff would be no problem from a financial standpoint.
He's 33 but he's still playing at a high level and Peters has already coached him, so there's familiarity there.
I have seen where the Ravens are also a possibility, but Peters has to be a draw and we have a lot more cap space than the murderers.
We'd still need to draft a guard and maybe sign another FA, but I think this boosts the likelihood for our success this season.
Anyone else want to bring him in?

It won't be any time soon from the sounds of it.
Wouldn't be surprised at all if the Ravens signed him. Matter of fact I called it when Cleveland signed Jenkins.

Scherff's strength is pass blocking and his weakness is run blocking, which the Ravens ran the ball the second-most last season and we ran the ball the third-least, so it would be smart for him to come here, especially since we have more cap space.
What makes you think it wouldn't be any time soon?

My expectation is we go into the draft with guard as our glaring need and then, after the draft, they may re-engage Scherff.

ZT said this week Bengals were not signing a guard prior to the draft at the league meeting.
Please use 2025 free agency to fix the trenches, not the draft!!!!!!!!

It may come down to Hendrickson possibly getting a raise, guessing thar puts them in a freeze until handled..unless they're in a hardline stance on this year's number that has to impact other moves
I doubt they can get two starting guards out of the draft, so I'd at least throw 5M at him and see if he's worried about the incoming class drying the FA market.

Locked On Bengals (James Rapien) is saying Bengals are NOT signing another Guard prior to the draft.
If true, expect Guard to be drafted early, or worse....rolling with these jabronis they got...
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs
Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.
Sorry for Party Rocking!

And we can believe that as the Gospel, because NFL coaches have never been known to blow smoke..
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

If they can sign Scherff for ~ 6 million they should do it. That takes away one more need for the team and still doesnt prevent them from drafting a guard should a talented one cross their path. The Bengals signed Trent Brown last year but still drafted Mims so the Bengals could do the same with Scherff.

Truth be told, they may already have an "understanding" that the Bengals want him to play this year. Scherff might not even be ready to sign with any team right now, as he likely wants to avoid OTAs and the rah, rah portion of camp. He don't need that stuff, but he does need the extra recovery and healing time. Many of the older vets are like that.

Didn't Trent Brown do that this year?

How is it so many ostensibly intelligent people believe we’re going to make meaningful additions?
They’re going to “top off” this outrageously awesome off-season with the draft and a few table-scrap UDFAs.
The Browns have been telling us who they are for decades. And so many still refuse to believe them.
If you see something suspicious, say something suspicious.

I saw that but I hope it's just smoke and mirrors or that we at least have a plan to sign on after the draft.

Yep.
Still have a glaring hole at DT/DE and Calias Cambell just got signed for 5 million dollars.
We have 25 million in cap room still. Are you telling me that guy couldn't have helped this team at all? It's such a joke.
The boys are just talkin' ball, babyyyy

the Bengals offense ..even with2 linemen injured and a rookie starting at R tackle.... played pretty damn good ..aside from or two teams..most fans complain about their offensive lines

I actually think they believe they are much closer than we realized. THIS as I've said before is the fallout of the dead cat bounce. If only they would remember how bad the team was week 1-12.
But they are stuck with the visions of the 5 game win streak (against bad opponents with the exception of Denver which we barely got by). And that vision has them thinking they were a playoff team last year with a touch of bad luck, but nothing worth even rebuilding the defense over.
Let alone upgrading the oline with legit talent.
But here we are. Drafting for need yet once again. Taking a Guard at 17 and passing up on DLine talent that the team desperately needs an influx of.

the offense and defense was playing remarkably better the last third of the season....they kept the players they needed to keep and signed those they needed to sign..I would imagine they will address a couple of positions through the draft..They made the necessary coaching changes that needed to be made..I like the fine tuning approach

I perhaps am one of the most critical on here..I think the energy and play on the field improved remarkably the last 3rd of the season..regardless of opponent and score..I think this team ..barring injuries,,which they had many last year...will be in the playoffs next year..Our DL talent, when you consider the play of the two rookies and even Murphy ..again the last third of the season..is pretty solid
