Cedric Johnson was probably the only Defensive End worse than Murphy as a run defender last year. Even if they draft a DE round one I can see Ossai or Sample getting the snaps early in the season. Worst Run defender on the DL last year was probably McKinnley Jackson and that's not a good look for your Nose Tackle. ![]()

He is a one gap penetrator all day every day. A relatively bad one, granted, but one regardless. Hoping he develops further this season.

I thought he played decent last year as a rookie and flashed some pass rush. DJ Reader wasn't good his rookie season either and their bodies were a lot alike coming out of college. McKinnley was a damn good run stopper in college, he can be one in the NFL. But it is Kris Jenkins I think makes the biggest jump this year as a pass rusher.

I guess I am just too optimistic and beleive players playing through injuries can be better after they fully recover. ![]() Please use 2025 free agency to fix the trenches, not the draft!!!!!!!!

Again, Jackson and Jenkins were injured and missed lots of valuable practices and game in 2024. I hope the naysayers are proven wrong and our DL is much better in 2025. ![]() Please use 2025 free agency to fix the trenches, not the draft!!!!!!!!

When it comes to projecting the pass rush success rate of college players to the NFL, pass rush win rate (and the associated stats like true pass rush win rate) is one of the biggest indicators and neither McKinnley nor Jenkins were particularly good pass rushers in college. It's the same reason I didn't like the Murphy selection either. You're right that McKinnley had a few flashes in his rookie season. I hope he builds on them. But I didn't like either draft pick at the time it was made. I'll happily be wrong though!

Sam Hubbard on one leg set a more firm edge against the run than Myles Murphy did all year even after Myles was healthy. Some of it could just be he's still struggling to diagnosis the blocking schemes because he was a much better run defender in college. ![]()

True on pass rush win rate and how it equates to NFL play, but Kris Jenkins went from a LB to a DT in college, that is why he was called the Freak. McKinnley is supposed to be a Nose Tackle which is why I didn't understand you saying he will never be one. Both Kris and McKinnley were great run stoppers in college so I think at the very least they can good in this aspect, we will see how they develop especially now that they have a new DL coach in Montgomery. Never liked Hobby and how he developed DL.

True on pass rush win When I think of a nose tackle's job, I think of a DT that occupies two gaps. Usually over center, taking on double teams from the center + a guard. McKinnley is a one gap penetrating DT. It led to a fair number of run stops in college, but I don't think he has the same skill set as DJ Reader does. Maybe I'm wrong and he'll develop the ability to control 2 gaps. But, for now, I consider Slayton our 2 gapping NT and then we have a bunch of 1 gap DTs to fill up the depth chart.

Cannot argue with any of that. Was a good move bringing in Slaton for this very reason. Needed a NT that could take up blockers and free up others to make plays in the running game. I actually am excited to see how both Kris and McKinnley develop this year behind Hill and Slaton. |
