Do We Need Guards As Much As I'm Thinking?

That's because there are no guards or tackles considered first rounders in this draft. The first round will be almost all defense from all the teams that aren't looking for a QB. Guards and Tackles will be there in the 2nd and 3rd.

agreed..but..I think most organizations respect Burrow, Chase Higgins , etc and many would love to have players like that in place..but..I would love to see a DL,OL and linebacker in the first 3 rounds of the draft

Given all the visits Bengals have had with OL who are currently guards or tackles who are projected to move to guard, they definitely seem like they will draft one if not multiple OL who could play guard.

As of right now, the depth is Volson, Ford, Patrick, and Kirkland.
I would argue that's the worst Guard group going into the season the team has had in the Burrow era since his rookie year when they had Alex Redmond, Xavier Sua-Filo, and rookies Mike Jordan and Hakeem Adeniji.
It was so bad they got Quinton Spain midway through the season when he was cut by BUF.

Maybe I'm overly down on Ford and Patrick, but I don't see any of the guys for Guard right now I would want to be out there as a full-season starter.
Out of the group, maybe I'd prefer Patrick the most, but that might just be because he hasn't been on the Bengals before.
And I just haven't cared much for Ford nor Volson.

What I'd be looking to do is draft at least one Guard and then pick up a vet FA on the cheap after the draft based on how the draft went.
And any of the current guards would be competing for backup duties.

it didn't translate into performance, as they ranked:

#32 in pass block win rate
#30 in run block win rate

the Bengals scored a TD on 36% of drives when not allowing a sack

We can what if all day. There simply are not very many, if any, guards that are going to stop Aaron Donald on that play.

If I recall correctly there was no attempt to even slow him down.  The guard made a bad decision (to double team another player with the tackle) and Donald was allowed to  shoot between the guard's back and the center who was occupying another DL.

May be wrong - probably am.   But if I'm right even a dead body in the gap is better than none.

True, Booker and Banks could play Guard but we didn't meet with them either. We have met with Ratledge and Savaiinaea who are 2nd and 3rd 
rounders though. This is where I expect a Guard to be picked.

I think the fanbase may be underestimating Lucas Patrick.

But yes, guard is a major need. I’m not betting the house on that feeling.

I think the fanbase is underestimating Patrick as well. I think he could be solid for us, his PFF ratings were solid as of late.

Much more than we can say about Volson.

I'm hoping that one team doesn't pick a guard before the later picks in the first (if at all) because then teams could freak out and make a run on picking guards.

But we need two, and there could be decent ones after the first two, but I keep saying that our first priority should be protecting Joe.

I've been leaning towards Donovan Jackson and if he falls to us in the second I'm sprinting (rolling at a very fast pace) to the podium.

I don't know if the FO thinks we need two or not. Lucas Patrick I think could be the starter at RG or LG right now, he was solid when he 
played unlike Volson lately. We can bring in Risner after the Draft, if it was me I already would of, but I am not the FO. Draft a Guard and
bring in Risner and I think we are better than last year at Guard especially with Cody Ford showing he is okay depth.

Would love Donovan Jackson in the 2nd, agree if he is there snatch him up, but we haven't met with him as far as I know and he will 
most likely be taken ahead of our pick at 49.

Just maybe having a really good, established G in there is the difference in winning a SB instead of hoping amid all the questions you're asking.Had JB had more time against the Rams on that last play Cinci. may have won the game.

Risner, Scherff, and Hernandez are my hopes in free agency but I'm just scared that we risk missing all of them if we wait. I agree in definitely drafting one early.

Not kowning their plans is part of the fun but, as a Bengals fan, it's also the scariest lol.

I would have the agents of these 3 on speed dial if we don't draft at least one guard capable of starting week 1.

Or could we find a trade partner for Pratt for a guard.
