Help is on the way: Montavious Adams
#1
Maybe.

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/montravius-adams-visiting-with-bengals-on-monday

I don't think it's anyone that moves the needle, or will make the 53, but a "visit" seems more official than it's needed this time of the year when typically you just hear they've signed some one (when it's just a camp body).

Wish it was a Guard or Safety. But maybe they aren't finished with free agency after all.

Not anyone that is going to bring pressure from the DT position, but may have history with new DL coach.

TC fodder? Possible back up NT? I wonder if Jackson showed them some interior pass rush last season that made them rethink coaching him up as our NT of the future? Why waste decent pass rush at a position that usually is needed to eat blocks and take on double teams? We don’t really have a back up NT rostered. I guess you could list Jackson as NT2 but is he REALLY a NT? His size says yes, but his pass rush says BIG 3T. If he and Jenkins continue to improve, we may have ourselves a pretty nasty rotation at 3T with the ability for Jackson to be able to swing over to play NT in pass rushing, true passing downs (3rd and LONG).

I'd rather have Montavious than an undrafted free agent as our 5th DT.

added a bit more depth to a position that can get thin quick

Tufele 2.0.

But the UDFA's were #5 & #6 on our DT depth chart.

Sounds like cheap DT depth. Looking back to 2024, a huge mistake by FO not having one true run stopping DT. Maybe they learned their lesson when the Hill and Rankins both went down and left us with 2 rookies.

Please use 2025 free agency to fix the trenches, not the draft!!!!!!!!

Not a bad move. Hopefully we bring in a Guard or Safety at some point.

Can we not wait until the training camp cuts start happening and pick up someone at that point? Adams had a worse PFF grade than Lawrence Guy last year. Let that sink in for a bit. The Bengals and the "value" signings. Good grief.

There won't be any guaranteed $$ for Adams. Or very, very little.

If someone better comes along, we can just cut him with no/negligible Dead Cap hit.

But I think the chances of a significant FA signing are pretty low.

Extending Trey will eat most of our realistic cap space. Especially with Pratt/Volson still on the team.

Mmm yes, a DT who has 2.5 sacks in 8 years.
That's what the team needs.

Oh wait, he was with the Packers when Montgomery was the DL coach, so just another dude Montgomery is familiar with.

I guess he's fine as DT5, but when are they going to care about pass rush?

Players with >3.0 sacks last year on the Bengals DL this year:
- Hendrickson - 17.5
- Ossai - 5.0

That's it.
That's the list.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs

Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Camp body?

See no reason why we don’t just list McKinnley as backup NT unless we’ve totally given up on that and view him as another 3T

Or if we view Jenkins as the direct NT backup and he’s not moving as far along as we thought he would?

Have a hard time believing we’d keep BJ, TJ, Jenkins, Jackson and this guy along with the DEs we have that can kick inside which include Sample, Stewart and Ossai.

You know what actually as i typed that we don’t have a backup NT at all and we signed that college guy

We may be looking for a backup NT that can’t be taken from the PS

Without Hendrickson, but with Adams the 15 DL on our roster had just a combined 15 sacks last year and as you mentioned, Ossai had 5 of those 15.

What do you mean?
How is 330 lb McKinnley Jackson not the backup NT?
I thought Jackson was the backup NT behind Slaton, and Jenkins the backup UT behind Hill?

Montravius Adams, to me, is more the replacement for Jay Tufele as DT5, if he even signs and makes the team at the end of preseason.
Let these rooks like Cross and Gregory compete with Adams for that last DL spot.

With that said, I don't see how they don't go 6 DE, 4 DT this year, especially with lack of proven IDL pass rush.
They got Hendrickson, Ossai, Murphy, Stewart as locks, plus Johnson, Sample, Thomas competing for the last 1-2 last DE spots.
I'd love to see Sample finally get put into a true Rucker/Fanene type role as primary nickel DT.

I dont see how they only go with 4 DTs.  Jackson and Jenkins were injured at the same time last year.  If something similar happened this year, you have just 2 DT's while you would be hoping some guys on the PS can contribute in some meaningful way.  If that happens then you have to worry about some other team poaching them.

Yeah that's how I see the DL, the nickle DT/UT is a DE, this guy old just be fodder if someone like Jenkins got hurt.

Hey, what do you know? The Bengals wised up from last year's misadventures at DT and bought a spare tire. Adams might not contribute a single thing this season, but if Slaton or Jackson goes down, I'll sure be glad that he's here.

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Lawrence Guy was here last year and had a better PFF grade than Adams.  Im not sure Adams helps this team anymore than having Guy on the team last year.  Both seem like throwaway signings to me

Let’s see how Sample looks this summer. He was outpacing Ossai in development their first 3 years.

His spot isn’t a lock for a 5th DT. With Stewart able play inside.if he is back 100% he can contribute.

I wanted a 5th DT too but through the draft. A dominant young line. We have vets. I’d rather give Cross a shot then another aging vet.

It's already been said that Adams has familiarity with the current DL coach from their Green Bay days. I'm not sure that Guy had familiarity with..anyone or anything Bengals when they picked him up. Like I said, a spare tire. Just there in case you really need it..

Golden isn’t loving what he has in Mac Jack or Jenkins. Can’t blame him, neither flashed last year.
