AFC NORTH CHANGING OF THE GUARD

(12-28-2015, 10:16 AM)Vlad Wrote: bengals are faux AFCN Champions because they are still the Steelers beyotches.

You've owned the browns and rats, but beating the Steelers only twice these last three seasons surely must leave you with a huge void.

What it has left us is two titles.. .. so if that is a huge void I will take it  also .. Do you know the Bengals have moved up on the Steeler hate meter more and more since we have been knocking them out of the playoffs more and more.  We have made the playoffs now 5 straight years.. the Steelers in the same span are on pace to not make it 3 of those years.. for too long it was just Ravens and Steelers battling for the title and the other having a good chance of making it as a Wild Card.. Well now we are in the mix year in and year out and that just pisses them off even more.

Changing of the guard would imply that there was a team that perennially was in control of the division and now there is a new team that will be in control of the division. That's just not the case. Over the last decade the AFC North has been one of the most consistently disputed divisions in football (except for the Redheaded stepchildren in Cleveland.)

It would have been more telling had the Bengals NOT won a division with a team that is 4 players down the depth chart at QB, RB and WR and another playing stretches without their star QB and arguably the best back in football. And yeah, the Browns.

Its not like the Bengals needed to prove anything to show that they are a contender in the AFC North. That's been done time and again. But to say that the Bengals will be the class of the division going forward? That's a tough sell.

But they're the class of the division right now, and that's all that matters right now.

We are certainly respected withing the division. No one plays us like they did in the dark ages after Boomer. Those year in year out 2-14 Bengals are gone. Once we consistently perform on the NATIONAL stage then we will gain further credibility as an NFL elite team. I certainly hope that this is the year that starts.

Back on the topic of this thread, we have been on point in this division for a while now. Just need to learn how to close out the Steelers and not lose junk games to the Browns. Ravens vs. Bengals has been going our way for a while now.

The ravens have the steelers number, we have the ravens number, the steelers have our number. Makes for an interesting division.

There are only 5 playoff victories from this division in the last 4 seasons.

All from one team. I'll hold off on "changing of the guard" comments when you're not the only team in the division that's actually winning playoff games and you're 6-5 against the two other division powerhouses, hoping to be 7-5 instead of 6-6 by next week.

This seems to sum up the division perfectly.

It should also be noted that the division has housed 3 of the last 7 AFC champions (42%) and has a 15-13 playoff record in that time. That record is a much more impressive 15-8 if you remove this "new guard" team.

The Bengals desperately need a playoff win this season

Yes we do need one. Gotta pull out weight in the postseason.

I'll settle for four.

Zero doubt the AFC North has changed.. Baltimore and Pittsburgh pretty much fought it out for the division in late 90s and most of the  2000s, but since 2009 the  have become a dominate force in the AFC North, winning more titles than the other two.. plain and simple...

Playoffs different matter,, but that is not the point of the thread..

WTF?!? Since 2009 Steelers have been in two Super Bowls and won one. Since 2009 Ravens have won a Super Bowl.

What has the new guard done?
You have it twisted on what is dominant.

Guess you don;t understand the thread... AFC NORTH is the thread not winning in playoffs... The Bengals in the last 5 years have become not only a force in the AFC North but have moved to the top of the division especially compared to the Steelers, I have Baltimore a bit advantage over the last 5 years on Steelers but I would say last three years (including this season) the Bengals have surpassed Baltimore in the AFC North.

We're talkin the AFCN blitz.

What comes after that is a diiferent story. That is when the bengals are complete failures and are a distant third behind the Steelers and ravens in terms of success.

2009 is an interesting year to begin with. I tend to use 2008 since that's when Flacco joined. Of course, that's just as arbitrary as it means nothing else for the Steelers and Bengals.

Going off 2009, the Bengals and Steelers have finished an average of 2nd in the division (combined 14) while the Ravens have finished an average of 2.14th (15 total). Bengals with 3 division titles over the Steelers, but the only team of the 3 to be 4th ever. So they're the only team of the 3 to ever be the worst team in the division. That does say a lot.

We could use more even numbers (5 or 10). 5 seems more relevant. It gives the Bengals the best average finish (1.8), then Steelers (2), then Ravens (2.2). Ravens and Bengals with 2 titles each. Steelers with 1.

Now, if we're rejecting all playoff performance, which obviously Bengals fans need us to do, then we have to only look at division games. In 5 years, the division records are

Ravens 19-10 (.655)
Steelers 17-12 (.586)
Bengals 15-14 (.517)

Remove the Browns

Ravens 11-8 (.579)

Steelers 10-10 (.500)
Bengals 8-11 (.421)

Hmm.... 2 division titles is impressive in 5 years... but it looks like the Bengals still struggle a lot more in the division and against the Steelers and Ravens.

I think what we can say is that it is a very even division with the Ravens having the Steelers number recently, the Steelers having the Bengals recently and the Bengals having the Ravens recently. Who wins the division seems to depend on non division games, and the Ravens are the only team within the division doing anything in the playoffs in the last 5 years.

None of this relates to what I said.

Now lets look at it another way..

Lets look at the Ravens and Steelers and Bengals overall over the lasts 2011 to now and 2006 to 2010

Record, Titles, Playoffs
 2011 to Now

Bengals  51-27-1, 2 titles, 5 playoffs
Steelers  48-31, 1 title, 2 (maybe 3) playoffs
Ravens  45-34   2 titles 3 playoffs

2006 to 2010
Bengals  33-46-1   1 title, 1 playoff
Steelers  51-29, 3 titles, 3 playoffs
Ravens  50-30,  1 title, 4 playoffs

So if you look at the last 10 years in 5 years cycles.. it is obvious that the Bengals have turned the tables in the AFC North, from being a doormat most of the time.. to having the best overall record, 2 titles and 5 straight playoffs.. as both the STeelers and Ravens have worse records in the 5 year span than before, less titles and playoffs as a whole.

I don;t know much more facts that I can give you to understand that the Bengals have really changed the AFC North and with having a better record, more titles and more playoffs have become the top dog.. You might not like it and I understand since as we have gotten better it has taken away from the Ravens.. but it is what it is.

You do know if we beat you this Sunday that will be 5 straight wins in a row against the Ravens.. another sign of the changing of the guard.

You can't have it both ways. You can't say that the playoffs are not the point and then try to point to 5 playoff appearances over 3, especially when the Ravens are 6-2 with a Super Bowl win in those 3 playoff appearances while the Bengals are 0-4. Bengals fans are the only fans in the NFL of playoff caliber teams who try to argue against looking at playoff performance. Except, that is the only thing that matters. Who had a better 2014 season? The 10-6 Ravens are the 10-5-1 Bengals who swept the Ravens and were higher in the AFCN? The answer is the team who actually won a playoff game. Hell, the Ravens had a better season than the division champ Steelers because they won a playoff game.

So either all of the playoffs matter (not just appearances) or none of it matters. Make a choice.

If the point of the thread is dominance WITHIN the division, then should we not focus on play within the division? In these 5 years that you're choosing to focus on, the Bengals have a losing record  against Steelers and are 5-4 against the Ravens, though only 4-4 if you don't count the time the Ravens rest their starters before their Super Bowl run.

As I said, the only thing we can take away from this thread is that within the last 3 seasons, the Ravens are beating the Steelers (5-2), the Bengals are beating the Ravens (4-1), and the Steelers are beating the Bengals (4-2). The Bengals have been very competitive overall and they have been able to beat the Ravens consistently since the Ravens secondary turned to crap after the Super Bowl, but they're not the new dominant force in the division if, within the years you are choosing to focus on, they have worse division records than the Steelers and Ravens.

DUH,, you really need to relax and understand the thread which you don;t... So i will make it simple in one sentence the Bengals have becomes the cream of the crop in the AFC North in the regular season over the last 5 years.. there plain and simple and CORRECT..
