I get tired of hearing him whine about his contract every single year. He wants paid like a top 5 DE, and he's not. Fox Sports has him 8th, PFF has him 9th.

Hendrickson lost me when he turned his nose up at the 28 million.

While i agree that he likely thought the number was a bit low, i think the bigger sticking point is the number of years. That's the one thing he keeps harping on in almost every interview. He wants long term security.

It's seemingly why he has come back multiple times for extensions. The Bengals gave him 4 years initially and the extension was for only 1 more year. He's "only" 30 years old. I'm sure he feels he still has 4 or 5 good years left. Plus, he's spoke several times of wanting to be here, not wanting to go to the highest bidder.

And he's not going to get it at his age. He should make the money he can while he can. If he plays for 28 million this year and then he's out of his contract and he can go anywhere he wants. He KNOWS he's not going to get a long-term deal at his age, which is why he's trying to blackmail the Bengals.

They are both wrong. And the likely compromises that would work will make them both unhappy and they aren't open to that.

There is a lack of love of football here. The Bengals FO and their nickel and dime act does not show love of football. It does not show sacrifice. You want your players to sacrifice? That starts from the top. OTOH Trey isn't acting like playing is a privilege that he would do for free. Many people would. Love means sacrifice. It means taking the chance on people you may have angered you or acted untrustworthy in the past. Or doing things that "you shouldn't have to do". Life isn't fair but you do get more out of it if you put more in.

Trey signed a 4 year contract but then came back to the Bengals after only playing two years of that contract wanting a raise.  Trey had just 8 sacks his second season with the Bengals and yet demanded a raise.   Guess what the Bengals did after Trey's 8 sack season?  They gave him the raise he wanted and added on an additional season for 21 million that included an additional 8 million dollar signing bonus just two years into his first contract.

Trey then posts a 17.5 sack season in the 3 year of his first contract and comes back to the Bengals again for the 2nd year in a row and wants another raise.  At this point he still hasnt finished his first contract with the Bengals not to mention the additional year that was added.  Trey comes back again after his 4th season wanting a raise.  The guy wants a raise every year.  Play out the contract you signed.  Dont sign a contract them come back every year wanting a new contract when other guys get more money than you.  If the Bengals gave Trey another raise, he would just come back wanting to redo his contract the next year or year after like he always has done.

If Trey is dug in the Bengals need to sign Za'Darius Smith with some of the money they have left to make sure we have a good edge rusher for the coming season.  If Trey wants to sit or retire we need to make sure we have guys signed that can come in a take his place.  At this point we cant count on Trey being there.  Either get a deal done now or sign Smith as Trey's replacement.

That's all well and good, but the fact is that the market for pass rushers exploded.  As always, the Browns up and screwed everyone.

If I were the Bengals, I would offer Trey the Danielle Hunter deal.  Boost him for this season, potentially one more.  Offer the exact 35 mil deal.  Trey probably wants more years, but if that's the case, then let him get it elsewhere after he makes 70 mil here.  He'll still have to play at a high level if he wants to get paid at his age.

I get that people think he should shut up and accept the deal, but that's an extremely unrealistic take.  As an organization, you have to show that you will reward players that exceed their contracts with elite play.  To operate otherwise is bush league.  17.5 sacks two years in a row is as elite as it gets.  Add in the fact that you're absolutely cooked without him and the picture starts to become a lot clearer.

On the other hand, if he wants 40 mil or more than 2 years, that's a problem.  You don't want to get left holding the bag on an aging and unproductive player.

I'll never get people that side with the family over a proven player.  They came to Moss and Stone and shook them down due to their level of play in relation to contract.  What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Everyone needs to stop hiding from the truth here: without Trey, this season is dead in the water.  Al Golden ain't putting on a uniform and boosting this horrific defense.  They did jack shit in FA.  They are every bit as eager to screw their first rounder as they are Trey.  If Demetrius Knight and Barrett Carter are what people are hanging their hopes on for a championship defense, then good effing luck with that.
