Guard Prospects
#1
Talked to someone who mentioned John Simpson on the NYJ who will be a free agent next season. Per my understanding he is a 6th man type player and has been overshadowed his career but is a good player. Sounds like a good trade candidate.

Dont we already have enough 6th man type players for the offensive line? Should we give up draft picks to add another?

I still want Risner or Scherff myself. Or Hernandez once he is fully healthy if he fits Peters scheme more.

We are clearly not signing an OG for Day 1 of camp.  If we can get a discount for someone ready in November I'm OK with it.

I'm also OK with being aggressive at the trade deadline this year for a player that fits our needs.

I second this emotion.

Whatever they do this year, we still need longer term IOL help. Patrick signed a 1 year deal, Karras & Volson are in their final years. Ford is inked for 2 years, but I think is OT3 more that OG3, and does not cost much to cut. Lee is cheap and McLaughlin a solid USFA.

Like it or not (not for me), it apoears we are takinga mostly wait & see approach at G. Agree any incoming is unlikely at all, but almost certainly not before camp.

You never know, though. We have a spot open after Pratt's release. Nonpoint in notctaking 90 (91) if you can

I agree, just saying if we do add one eventually one of these 3 would be preferable to me over Simpson.

Spot on. We will see, I am not expecting us to add one of these Guards yet. But it may happen down the road and it would be a good move
for insurance in case someone gets hurt. I still think we are upgraded at Guard, I just don't know how much. Would be nice to put a cherry on
top and make sure.

Everyone seems to believe we upgraded LB with FA journeyman / backup Ster,  and draft pick. Why not the same faith in guard?

Wouldn't it be nice if Scott Peters can actually deliver on some player development? I'm pulling hard for him to bring guys along that all had potential when they got here, but never were able to fine tune their game under Pollack.

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

They are betting on the idea that Peters will actually coach up the youngsters unlike what was happening. And to be honest it isn't such a long shot. Fairchild and Rivers are both potential NFL starters. Volson if someone can just get him to set low consistently is a better Guard because the plays he DID actually set correctly he looked pretty good - it was the ones he didn't where he gave his chest up and lost anchor. Lee has potential and they even got a UFDA that by all rights should have been drafted (Seth McLaughlin).

A coach that enjoys teaching and improving technique is a valuable thing to have at the NFL level.  It seems these days that a good number of OL coaches are all about the scheme, and don't spend a lot of time on individual player skill development. Face it, CFB has changed over the past 20 years. It isn't producing the same quality of OL with fully developed skill sets, like they did before. Those rapid fire, quick release sets in CFB have given the advantage to the defense in recent years because OL aren't learning to protect for 4-5 seconds in pro style offenses, like in times before. Let's hope that Peters is as good as communicating his ideas as he was at demonstrating his abilities in combat sports.

I do - I’’m hopeful that the starting guards won’t be absolutely awful this year. They can’t be any worse than what they had (hope I don’t regret that statement) so yes I think the IOL will be better. All they have to do is be somewhat mediocre and it will be a huge improvement.
The new guys should thank the previous starters for setting the bar so low.

Pretty much. Patrick has a great pass blocking history as does Fairchild. They really have great depth and expect a good group of 5 to emerge.
Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Joe Burrow” Zac is the best head coach in the NFL & that gives me a lot of confidence." Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

Wait, what? Then why didn't some team have him locked up on a top level contract?

Dudes a career backup who has graded out as average to slightly above, in his best seasons.

League average would be a tremendous improvement over last year.

They basically throw limited resources at Guard and hope for the best. I don't know. Maybe it's better than it was last year, but hard to really see a really good offensive line developing.

Patrick and Fairchild don't have to be top 10 or even top 15 guards, just be better than what we had last year and it's a win! I think Peters is a big upgrade over Pollack, so i'm good with the line right now. I wouldn't mind signing Hernandez as an insurance policy for later in the season if we have an injury.

Well...tbh...

If you have statistically the two worst guards in the NFL, you have no option but to be better...if not the same.  Cool

I'm really liking the kid from OKC! He can shoot the shit out of it! Curry is good, but he's too old to be a prospect. Wink

1606 pass blocking snaps the last 4 years and 3 sacks screams good at pass blocking. But thanks for playing.
