Notes From Training Camp 2025
#21
I take it Erick is coming around sooner than thought with that terrible injury. I didn't think he even had a shot at playing this year...

Wild. Would love it if he somehow got to play late in the season, damn good wham blocker.

Does this mean Bengals think All has a shot at being ready prior to game 4?

IR: Injured reserve

Officially, the term is reserve/injured list, but it's commonly referred to as injured reserve or IR. Players are put on IR when they have a football-related injury that requires them to miss at least a few weeks. Players on IR don't count against the 53-man active roster limit, but their salaries count against the salary cap.

Players on IR must miss a minimum of four games. Teams may designate up to eight players to return from IR during the regular season (and up to 10 if a team makes the postseason). An individual player can be designated twice.

Once a player on IR is cleared to practice, they have 21 days to either be activated to the active roster or be placed on season-ending IR. They can also be released or traded.

Players who are placed on IR before the start of the regular season can miss the entire season, unless they are designated to return when the roster is trimmed to 53 players prior to the start of the season.

PUP: Physically unable to perform

Like players on IR, players are put on the active/physically unable to perform list (or PUP) at the start of training camp because of a football-related injury. The difference is these players count against the active roster limit.

Players on the PUP list can participate in all team activities except practice. They can be activated at any point during camp once they are medically cleared. A player can't be placed on the PUP list after they have practiced or played in a preseason game.

Players on the active/PUP list can be moved to the reserve/PUP list during the preseason roster cutdown period. Players won't count against the active roster limit if they're placed on the reserve/PUP list and they must miss the first four games of the season.

NFI: Non-football injury/illness

Players who suffer injuries outside of football or have a long-term illness are placed on the non-football injury/illness list. Rookies who are still recovering from injuries suffered in college are often placed on the active/NFI list to start the season.

Players who remain on the NFI list after the roster is set at 53 at the end of camp can be placed on the reserve/NFI list and will miss at least four games. They don't count against the 53-man active roster limit.

If they placed him on IR right now it would be season ending.  If they place him on IR during final roster designations they can set him for return.

He had his second surgery since the last injury in Mar.  While it would be nice to see if he could play, I think he would be better off giving himself a full year of rehab before trying to get back out there.  The knee has undergone 3 surgeries in 2 years..its been through a lot

It's next season and I'm hopeful

Interesting that All was placed on PUP and not IR,  IR would have ended his season,  PUP leaves open a chance to play

Yep. When i first read that i was like heeeeeeeyyyyy. But i'm not gonna get my hopes up. They could move him to IR at any time.

All’s placement on pup is noteworthy given they had ru,ed him out for 2025 already. I thought.

They may be forced to sign a free agent end with 2 missing.

Yep they are short bodies at the edge position but I know exactly who they should sign - that Hendrickson guy and the rookie Stewart out of Texas A&M.

I would agree with what pally said. They could hold him on PUP and IR him after the rosters are set, juuuuuust in case he is cleared to play late in the season. IR now does not leave that option.

All we heard about after last season was how good our talent was on defense with all these draft picks we spent on it and how the defense was all Lou's fault.  Lou didnt have a true NT, played two rookies at DT that were injured at the begining of the year and had to deal with injuries at other positions.  The team is now healthy, the two rookies have a year in the NFL under their belt, we have supposedly a great run stopping NT and we drafted more rookies to help.  There is no reason this defense shouldnt be much better this year if the problem last year was Lou not being able to coach all this talent.  We have that same talent back plus added to it.

I thought Lou overall did a good job but the numbers don't lie the past 2 years our defense has been subpar at best, other teams go through same issues and injuries but we played worse than them. It was time for a change especially the short window more teams have on a real SB run.

Lou’s defense was only in the top half of defensive rankings in 2022 coming in at 13.  All the other years they were in the bottom half with 2021 being 16th.  My attitude with Lou is mediocre at best.  He did a poor job coaching up the youngsters which is important if all of your cap money is going to the offense.  It will be interesting to see how the colts defense performs this year.

That is a good start, but I won't get excited until he reports on Wed.  He definitely is a wait for the physical guy

I liked Lou in some respects but he did have an achilles heel in that his scheme required experienced pros with football smarts to execute it correctly. That was why when Lou finally bowed to reality and simplified the defense the play improved, and it also was his death knell. Golden's whole rep is around coaching players up and making the calls and alignments of his defense digestible by players so they concentrate on play on the field and not trying to understand the scheme.

Yep, too complicated of a scheme can really hamper young or new player's ability to adapt. Sure hope Golden can get his Defense up to
speed quickly. Also like the thought of adding Za'darius Smith if the Trey and Shemar crap keeps going on any longer.
