Notes From Training Camp 2025
(3 hours ago)ochocincos Wrote: Dalton Risner primarily played RG last year, LG all years prior.
Here were his grades and stats last year.

Risner:
Snaps at RG - 537 (none at any other position last year)
Sacks allowed - 0
Total pressures allowed - 16
Pass blocking grade - 76.2
Run blocking grade - 57.4

Cody Ford played RG really just one year, which was 2021 in BUF.
Snaps at RG - 485 (none at any other position that year)
Sacks allowed - 2
Total pressures allowed - 26
Pass blocking grade - 47.2
Run blocking grade - 47.9

Ford did play 2 games at RG in 2020 before switching over to LG for Weeks 3-6 and then also Week 9, but he played only about 350 snaps total that year, only about 120 at RG.

Any way you cut it up, Risner is a far superior pass blocker and about the same or maybe slightly better run blocker than Ford.

TY
I am not a fan of Risner's run blocking against the AFCN DL's, but love his pass blocking. This tells me Ford is not a great option to start, he is worse than Volson was at LG last season and also Cappa at RG

Patrick needs to show up Monday and prove he is more than a backup OL, otherwise we need to make a move for Risner IMHO

Just cleared...Mclaughlin took his first team reps on Monday and that was 7 on 7.  Yesterday was the first day he play 11 on 11.

Lee also just started practicing again

In order to determine their true depth at center they probably need more than a couple of days of practice

It is very simple, 2 young guys who have been hurt can't just be thrown in the mix and expected to beat out and play better than vets who are healthy. If they had been healthy, that is different, but neither was to start TC.

You have been very clear and are spot on Pally.

Trying Karras at RG would give them both more reps with the 1st and 2nd string.

That is if they are done trying Volson at center.  Hilarious Hilarious Hilarious

Have you ever seen John Wayne toss the kid in the creek to teach him how to swim?

That is what we need to do with these young centers and safeties.

I do certainly get the "dont mess up two positions trying to fix one" crowd. But this really isn't the worst idea. Get someone reps with the ones and just gauge how Karras is at RG at the same time. He's been with us awhile now. Of course that takes reps away from Patrick but rest might do him just as much good.

Im not sure why you keep thinking this is a good idea.  Karras hasnt played RG in years and when he did play RG, he wasnt that good.   Also, Matt Lee was a 7th round pick and Seth McLaughlin was undrafted both have been injured and havent practiced yet you think the Bengals can just put them out there and that would solve the O line situation?  The better solution would be to keep Karras at center where you know he plays well and sign a proven RG like Risner or Scherff that has a track record of being able to protect the QB.  Have Lee and McLaughlin continue to practice and get better while they learn.

There is nothing to lose by trying it out we can always move him back to center if it doesn't work and we get to see both young centers with the 1st and 2nd strings.

Karras has exp. at guard in the NFL and played well there do not know if it was LG or RG but a day or two at RG won't hurt and might help a great deal.

Not like we have other options to try ATM.

That is the problem we are not making any moves to bring someone in so do not sit on your hands and hope.

Change things up and try something you have not tried so far this camp.

I do not know which guard spot he played but I do know when he came here he was a better guard than center.

Figured, thanks Pally. Haven't heard much from either of these Centers this Offseason as both have been hurt. I like both of them though
for the future. On moving Karras, I would understand if he was being moved to LG where he played well with the Pats, but not RG and this
would of had to of happened way earlier than this with a healthy Center. Not time to be messing with the OL switching things up IMO.

Now adding Dalton Risner would not hurt a thing and he played RG last season with the Vikes.

He was a LG when he had the better stats then came to the Bengals from New England

Karras had one season ('21) where he played 695 snaps at LG and 117 at RG.

He has a couple other seasons where he played 165 and 101 snaps at RG.

His first 2 full seasons ('19/'20) he played over 1k snaps at C and the last 3 seasons w/bengals have been 1k snaps at C.

We have no time to sit around and hope for a decent RG to get cut or put our hopes on a guy that has not been signed by any team this late in the FA period.

Or hope that we go out and get someone which we have been very quiet at doing this off season.

Patrick will be a revolving door at RG worse than Cappa was last year injured and declining.

Patrick stands there like an 80 year old man that took double his does of Xanax for the day letting guys swim move past him without getting a hand on them.

Or he misses a stunt and Shemar about fell down and stumbles into Joe because Shemar was expecting a RG to be there to collide with but nobody was there so he stumbles into Joe.

Karras to RG is our only in house option.

Eh, I think you are really underestimating the chemistry and calls that have to be made by the Center. As was said, Karras was good at
LG with the Pats, not RG. We have no proven Center that can make the calls as good as Karras. I could go on and on why your solution
just does not make as much sense as adding a proven RG rather than moving our proven Center.

A new offensive wrinkle has been introduced at practice...a Tight End Screen

As expected lots of media commentary on yesterday's scuffle/fight

First and foremost, they all pointed out that Shemar did not intend to hit Joe. He rounded the corner, untouched by Patrick and was off balance
Secondly. There is no way in the world Joe would not have been sacked if that were a real game. Patrick/RG MUST make that block
However, they all agreed that the response was spot on
They were glad the OL stepped up to respond to Joe getting knocked. They want to see more of that in a game. They feel that previous lines have been too placid when the QB gets beaten up illegally after the play with extracurricular hits
No one else got involved other than to break things up. Stewart was immediately pulled and had a one-on-one "discussion' with Coach Montgomery
In the locker room, the captains (and potential captains) said all the right things. Karras pointed out that the defense cannot hit Joe, but that the OL cannot let defenders go unblocked. He said he thought the afternoon OL meeting would start with a line along the tone of "You cannot suck like that." As he pointed out, all their hopes and dreams go through Joe. BJ had some one-on-one time with Shemar. TJ Slaton, who is giving off all sorts of captincy vibes, helped defuse things with humor

Hopefully, a bad practice gave the whole offense a wake up call. Things can get ugly fast, if Joe has a bad game because of constant pressure
