Geno Atkins was 30 we paid him and he was done for. I bet I can come up with a lot more examples of pass rushers who flamed out after 30 than he can that succeeded after 30 lol.

It’s worth the risk to roll the dice when you have a Joe Burrow. If ever there was a time to go all in it’s now.

Well, he certainly missed the Wisdom of Solomon on this one. Whit was an outlier, not the norm. There's a reason most players in certain positions don't get much after they turn 30. It's because they do not produce much.

If they guaranteed year 1, and made years 2 and 3 incentive laden, I would agree. I do not want three years of guaranteed money tied up in a 31 year old Defensive End on the backend of his career.

**** that. Pay the man his money and let’s try to win a goddamn Lombardi. I swear some of you root for Katie Blackburn more than you do the players. They aren’t going to do anything better with the money anyway.

Trey's been on the team how many years now and how many Lombardi's do we have? I actually think the money spent on him is better spent on a couple of upgrades at other positions. If we guarantee his money for three years and he falls off as expected, we are really screwed.

That’s pretty terrible logic. He played a big part in getting them the closest they’ve ever been. Or I guess some have forgotten dude sitting all by himself on the bench after winning the AFC Championship because he was literally too winded from chasing Mahomes around. Had a sack in the SB too before Whit shut him down the rest of the game.

As for the other bold I have news for you they look pretty screwed at the moment anyway. This defense is atrocious, and subtracting the one star player they have sure seems pretty stupid to me. Particularly over guaranteed money when all the rest (avg & term) are worked out. This has forever been one of the biggest differences between the Bengals and rest of the league.

It also really does feel like Whit all over again. All Pro player showing no signs of decline or health issues, multiple failed attempts in the draft to replace him (with Whit it was Ogbuehi & Fisher - with Trey it’s been Murphy & Ossai). And yet this ownership is so afraid of losing a contract negotiation they end up “not valuing an aging player” or whatever exact nonsense Troy Blackburn said about Whit.

That's my point. The defense needs a lot of help, so money spent to upgrade several positions makes more sense overall than paying it all to one position. Putting all the defensive money into one player when so many positions need upgraded seems really stupid to me.

If you trust this FO to spend the money wisely I can see why you would feel that way. I sure as hell don’t.

I'd like to see 3 years w/ 2 guaranteed, but with an out for the player after year 2.

This feels like the logical choice. I wonder if the Bengals are at 1 and the 2nd only guaranteed for injury, if not I'd try that.

Makes complete sense. I think Trey would take that as well.
