RG Options

I was just scrolling X and Zim and others were saying how poorly Patrick is doing at RG and how he's not a fan of our situation at the position.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions to solidify that spot?

Do we need to look to make a trade?
Bring in a FA?

Or is there someone on the roster that we like?

I'm pretty happy with all the other positions on offense.
But it would be nice to solidify this position as well.

If they were smart? Jalen rivers. The most logical option is dalton risner in free agency.

I vote Dalton Risner. I dont believe he's played much RG and his pass blocking is better than his run blocking. But he looks to be our best option via FA unless Schreff can be compelled to play. The coaches can't be happy with Patrick and if that trend continues over the next week or so they need to do something. I can't understand watching him get beat as regularly as he has been and going into week 1 with him as the starter.

Bengals are in a vary precarious situation when it comes to both their Guard spots and their depth on the Offensive Line.

Lucas Patrick is not having a good camp. Cody Ford maybe the only other tackle on the roster and he doesnt give you the warm and fuzzies. I like Jalen Rivers but it's already iffy with one rookie guard. Volson they obviously want to replace.

I thught Risner was more of a LG, but was told he played RG and did well for Vikings last year. He has my vote. I just wonder why other guard needy teams have no signed him or other guards available.

The coaches has to be concerned Patrick is getting beat a lot in camp, one guys beating him is a rookie Stewart.

Options are pretty limited at this point. All they can do is cross their fingers. A trade is another option, but we all know how stingy the Bengals are with trades. 

I'd get the Saints on the phone and ask them about Cesar Ruiz. He's signed through 2028, but his contract isn't structured in a way the Bengals love. Maybe the Saints can throw some cash in. Throw them a 3rd or 4th round pick?

Burrow and Karras have too much chemistry built up regarding protection calls, reads, etc. I'm not making that move.

It isn't just RG. OT3 is also an issue.

PFF: O 67.0 (42/136), Pass block 76.2 (13/126), Run block 57.4 (96/136).
Counts: 537 snaps (65/136); 0 penalties (1/136), 0 sacks (1st), 1 hit (38th), 16 pressures (71st).

Great pass block, penalty, and sack numbers. 16 pressures in in 537 snaps isn't great, and neither is the run blocking. 537 snaps is also not a full season

Played all 537 at RG last year, and has history of playing at LG.

PFF: O 64.7 (53/136), Pass 74.5 (19/136), Run 57.3 (97/136).
Counts: 1,013 (31st), 2 penalties (55th), 0 sacks (1st), 1 hit (38th), 17 pressures (76th).

Very similar grades to Risner. Much better in pass pro (top 20) and mediocre run block. Scherff's 0/1/17 sack/hits/hurries line is almost identical to Risner's 0/1/16, but comes in 625 pass block sets to Risner's 345. 

Scherff had 2 penalties to Risner's zero, but in almost twice as many snaps. Career RG.

Shaq Mason is also an option, but is a step down. 

If you gove me a Scherff or Risner choice, I'd take Scherff. Though he probably will be more expensive, might retire, and is a shorter term solution. 

The latter part does not bother me (much), as I would pick another G high in the draft or spend in FA to solve it. Of course, I would have done that THIS year, so who knows with our FO. 

OT3 is also a problem. Ford stinks. I'd have brought Trent Brown back

When looking at Risner's strengths and weaknesses throughout his NFL tenure, his run blocking is just ok, but his pass blocking is good.
It's possible teams want someone who can run block better.

IMO, Risner has shown to be a good pass blocker through most of his NFL career and showed last year he can play RG solidly after playing LG all years prior, so he has versatility.
He's a perfect fit (IMO) for a team who has a rookie starting at LG and crappy veterans being considered for the RG spot.
Risner could easily cover RG and Fairchild at LG, but if Fairchild were to go down, either plop Patrick in at LG or pivot Risner to LG.
Risner should also command less than $4 mill.

(I also have to wonder if some teams are waiting for the season to start because of the stupid rule that they don't suffer as much of a penalty if they cut a guy midway through season if signed after season starts)

I'm guessing you would suggest Matt Lee at Center? That wouldn't be much different than Jalen Rivers and 2 rookie Guards. In that scenario at least Karras would stay at his natural position and Burrow keeps the same snapper.


Really there are no good options right now. I know Dalton Risner is a hot name but we don't know what's wrong with that situation.

Scherff announced his retirement. Apparently he retired earlier this year, but just recently communicated it.
