1. Jordan Battle - Besides the patty cake tackle he attempted on the Daniels TD there were a couple other plays I noticed him well, just playing awful. Taking bad angles to runners, it looked to me like he was totally lost on what to do more often than not. If he truly is the starter umm....
2. Demetrius Knight Jr. - He looked totally overwhelmed on a regular basis, got washed out on run plays way to easily, just seemed to lack any killer instinct. Very disappointed in his play.
3. Joesph Ossai - Again looked overwhelmed, got steamrolled way too often, and again just looked unsure and overwhelmed.
I totally get it's a preseason game. But those guys just very much seemed to have the deer in the headlights look right from the jump. What wrong with Burks as the starter at LB, put Anderson in at Safety.
And needless to say we need Trey!! I saw a post on social media this morning from M. Strahan, I believe - Bengals pass rush without Trey 32nd in the league. Bengals pass rush with Trey 12th.
Our 1st team defense needs a big kick in the ass and fast.

I would agree on all 3. And unfortunately they aren’t the only ones. Logan Wilson also looks terrible.

I saw McKinley Jackson let an interior runner slip by him and I think he even got a hand on him. That is basically his one job. Get off the block and make the tackle.

Agree
Basically the entire 1st team D looks like hammered dog doo. But those 3 looked a bit more unsure/out of their league to me. Just not sure what the answer is but something needs done in a hurry.
We're not gonna score 45 points every game

Yup
There were several post in GD thread about our starters at LB and DB being awful. But our Dline got rag dolled on regular basis as well. Holes you could drive a freight train thru.

I mean, we need Trey back, but he's not helping one but with the poor run defense. Yeah, I get on that first drive they ran a jet sweep to Deebo, which isn't something you expect in preseason and the Daniels TD was on a scramble, but it needs to improve.

Kris Jenkins and TJ Slayton looked awful to me and are my biggest concerns.

Agree on all 3.
And I'd add Logan Wilson & Slaton.
Remember, our D stunk last year. Trey was our best player and isn't out there. I'd put BJ Hill & Hilton on the medal stand, and BJ has not played yet and Mike is in Miami.
Thru 2 games, there is hasn't been 1 "starter" on D that has made even one good play that I am aware of. Not one.
Hendrickson, BJ Hill, Slaton, Ossai; L. Wilson, Knight; CTB, Turner, D. Hill; Battle, Stone.

Is anyone surprised this defense looks awful? It was awful last season. The Front Office didn't address anything so it's not like it's magically going to get better.

Battle has been so embarrassing. Hurts especially because I was ready to be a fan when he got here and he has earned only a few hand claps.

I'm with you....I had high hopes. He's dashed said hopes.

Battle has never impressed me and he did not play last night but Stone as well never impressed me. The starters last night were so bad it is hard to evaluate and only pick 3. We were missing BJ Hill, Stone, Murphy or Trey so 3 starters last night.
The 3 based on first 2 weeks I am most disappointed are Wilson, Battle and Ossai. They are vet starters and are not playing like vets.
On to 2025, let's save the drama for the off season.

Agreed then you have people defending Battle saying he didn't want to hit Daniels. First of all I'm not sure if that's even true because he completely whiffed on a tackle before that and I wouldn't put it past him if he just really missed Daniels. If it was true it would annoy me for two reasons the first being your a 3rd rd. pick in year three and you've yet to prove you can play and you think your good enough to not make that tackle. Its also a pride thing called me an old school idiot if you like your defense was the laughing stock of the league and your unproven I would have drilled him. Then you have the Commanders players trying to kill Joe Burrow who's one of the best and most respected players in the league but we should let Daniels walk into the end zone ?

It's like he has zero aggression. No killer instinct, and just doesn't really wanna be out there.

Well, one would think/hope the ones that have seen significant snaps last year would show some progress. And for the most part, they ain't.

I get what you're saying but preseason games are to evaluate individual performance not team performance. And many had ugly performances!

I understand, but hard to evaluate Anderson for example when he front 7 was allowing holes you could drive a truck through. Hard to evalaulte CB's in coverage when they hardly needed to pass the ball.
Just a hard game to evalate all 11 guys indiividually who started on defense in my opinion.

How does Battle go from a top rookie safety to this shit in two seasons? I don’t get it. Something has to be draining their mojo Cincy.
