What pick(s) would surprise you (in a good way)?
#1
Every year, we are torn between doing mocks as if we were GM and mocks that are more in line with what the Bengals usually do.

Many of us would like to see a certain position and/or player selected at a certain point of each draft, but the Bengals end up not going that route, making us mad/sad.

What position and/or player selection would surprise you (in a good way) if the Bengals made that pick?

Mine would be taking a DT and/or C within the first three rounds.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

I don't think a DT in the first rounds would be a surprise at all. Peko is on his last legs and we have no real depth behind him. I pretty much guarantee a DT in the first three rounds.

On the other hand a lot of people are predicting LB early in the draft, but I don't see it. We just gave Vinny Rey starter money for 3 years and bot Burfict and Maualuga are signed through '17. We will probably take a LB in the middle rounds for depth (maybe even 2), but I don't see one early in the draft.

So my pleasant first round surprise would be a good 3-down LB.

Would love it if we added Darron Lee from Ohio State. I think the kid is going to be a star in this league and would love if he falls in our lap at pick #24 and we actually then make the selection...also would be pleasantly surprised with a Defensive Tackle in the first. A'Shawn Robinson falling to the Bengals at that spot would be ideal but any of him, Rankins, or Billings would be nice.

I am not going to be shocked this year if we draft a Sooner :)
Marvin was at the Pro-Day, although I'm not sure who he was scouting, I'm thinking he was looking at Charles Tapper or Sanchez and that Shepherd had such a good day that he might have caught his eye.

I can't see us not taking Lee if he's available in the first, but his stock is soaring and I wouldn't be surprised if he goes in the top 15. If by some miracle no one takes corners because of a run on DT's and Hargreaves falls to us I would be flabbergasted. I am really worried that we will draft a receiver that would be a 3rd rounder in most other drafts but because of the bad class and our need we will force the pick.

Rankins would surprise me purely because I like him a lot.

Center is a need, and it would surprise me if they took one early. But I would be ok if they drafted either Kelly or Whitehair 1st. Preferably they would trade down and add a pick to do this. Reality tells me they won't uproot Bodine with such a high pick though.

I see very little chance they move on from Bodine.  Center is one of those positions that most players get better with in time... hopefully thats the case with bodine lmao.

Same here. I try to not get excited for a certain player anymore since we usually never draft that guy.

Darron Lee. He is the do it all LB, with blazing speed, tackling skills, and coverage ability that this team has been screaming for, for quite some time. However, even if he were to fall to 24, I would be shocked to see the Bengals select him. After all; CB, T, WR are their positions of "premium", or so it would seem.

I hate to poo-poo on the thread, but predicting what you can't predict seems like an exercise of futility. And judging by the answers, it's morphed into: "daddy like x, if I close my eyes will you get x for daddy?"

I disagree. Just a few years ago, we all said that the Bengals needed a first-round OG but didn't expect it because the Bengals had never selected an OG in the first round.
Yet, surprisingly to many, the Bengals ended up doing just that when they selected Kevin Zeitler. Many thought it was nice to see the Bengals finally doing something they hadn't done before.

Many people mock certain players and/or positions at certain rounds even though it usually doesn't follow the Bengals draft trends. But the hope is that the Bengals might buck that trend this year.

That was the purpose of this thread.

As for what the thread evolved into....yes, you are right (to some extent). People are saying "I'd be surprised if X was selected because I like X".
Where it really was meant to be like "I'd be surprised if the Bengals selected Reggie Ragland because they already have Rey Maualuga. But I'd be happy because I think that Ragland would be an upgrade over Maualuga."

To prompt Stormborn....

Why do you think the Bengals wouldn't select Rankins? Is it because he will go too soon and you think the Bengals will select a DT later? Is it because you think the Bengals feel like they are set at DT or they aren't looking for a UT?

1) 3rd down pass rush specialist....just a flat out edge rusher who we're not worried about bulking up to play the run (we're not short of big DE's who can play run, I want a flat out burner...guess like Dontay Moch was supposed to be)

2) Free Safety....we just don't tend to value it highly in the draft so whilst Iloka / Williams are pegged as starters I would be surprised but actually quite pleased if we drafted one high'ish

3) Kicker ...again a draft pick on a kicker would be a surprise but I've got a creeping feeling that Nugent is gonna flame out at some point so may be nice to invest a pick...the Huber pick worked out great

No man because they never pick the players I want!  Cry

As a grownup answer, they seem pretty embedded at the idea that they have magical powers to transform mid round DL talent into quality starters because it worked twice half a dozen years ago. It's simply their philosophy and I'd be pleasantly surprised if they adjusted it and took any DL in the first, especially now that we're basically committed to double dipping at WR this year.

Agreed, but our new Dline coach could be the wild card. He might be able to lobby better than Jay Hayes.
Today I'm TEAM SEWELL. Tomorrow TEAM PITTS. Maybe TEAM CHASE. I can't decide, and glad I don't have to.

This spurs the question of how much say will the new position coaches actually get compared to organization saying, "No, it must be done this way!"

Wondering if (and hoping?) we see any change in philosophy with new blood at DL and LB coaching positions.

Yeah, that is clearly the reason they have used 5 second/third round picks on the D-line over the last 6 years.

And I also remember how the Bengals would never use a first round pick on a TE or OG.

TRIGGERED, but will restrain.

Is it so hard for anyone to see why it would be pleasantly surprising it could happen? Because something happening when it has very very little precedent makes for, you know, a surprise.

I'm not saying it CAN'T, but I'd make an argument why it won't, just like you could make an opposite stance.
