Good news.
Quote:After Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier leveled Bengals running back Giovani Bernard with a brutal helmet-to-helmet hit in the playoffs, the NFL said Shazier’s hit was legal. But it won’t be anymore.
NFL V.P. of Officiating Dean Blandino said today that under a new interpretation of the league’s rules against hits with the crown of the helmet, hits like Shazier’s will be illegal going forward.
Specifically, the new interpretation eliminates the requirement that a defender would have to “line up” his opponent in order for a hit with the crown of the helmet to be a penalty. Starting this season, when a defender lowers his head and forcibly hits with the crown of the helmet, it will be a foul, regardless of the angle the player takes.
The new interpretation comes too late for Bernard, but it’s a sensible decision by the NFL: At a time when the league calls brain injuries its greatest concern, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to allow brutal hits like the one Shazier put on Bernard.

AKA....
NFL VP of Officiating Dean Blandino said today that after everyone called out their bullshit on their no-call of blatant Steelers favoritism, hits like Shazier's will be illegal going forward, even though it was already illegal and should have been called, fined, and suspended.
Specifically their bullshit made up unwritten requirement that a defender would have to "line up" (as opposed to accidentally running in the direction of the ball carrier and tackling on accident) has been called out as the pure bullshit it was to save the Steelers from any penalties, fines, or playoff losses, and now they're going to try to be less obvious with their finagling of how rules only apply to certain teams.

The NFL's way of saying we ****** up again in that game. It was and most likely always be a penalty, they just couldn't seem to do their job that day in making proper calls.

It was always a penalty. They just couldn't admit to the colossal **** up against the Bengals that game really was.

Has nothing to do with couldn't, has everything to do with never cared to. The NFL doubled down by taking away Munchak's 10k slap-on-the-wrist fine for pulling a player's hair.

That's two rule changes inspired by the Steelers cheap-shotting the Bengals.
Everything in this post is my fault.

Three by my count. Palmer's knee, River's jaw, and Gio's head.
Well, two if you don't count the fact that they're not actually changing any rule this time. Nowhere in the rules does it mention "lining up". They just made that shit up on the spot, so them saying they're removing it is a joke because it never existed.

Spin Spin Spin (Was always a penalty and they and everybody else knows it.)
Peyton got him a SB ring on the way out.
Ride into the sunset ,Shane, Ride into that sunset.
It was beautiful. I think I'm gonna cry.
If you bet the NFL, it might be smart to start betting the dramatic and theatrical line in the playoffs instead of the best team. After all that is what they are after.
The NFL's arse is showing on this one. (And their spin isn't covering it.)

They are truly more flagrant, and less tactful, than politicians in their BS recollections and excuse making. Wow. I wish I could quit watching pro football, as our only source is so incredibly corrupt.

I saw that. Only according to how the rule is written it was already a penalty all the way. The fact that the NFL doesn't call the rule as stated, but instead uses some hidden arbitrary that they introduced is BS.

I'm just glad we injured their shitty team enough that they couldn't go any further into the playoffs. Everyone in that stadium including the ref's knew that was a dirty hit and should have been flagged, but doing the right thing doesn't put any extra money in your pockets.

Now we need a time machine so this game can be replayed with decent officiating.

And do you know who will be the first beneficiaries of this? Probably the Steelers after a bad choice from Burfict... That'd be our luck wouldn't it.
