BREAKING: Eifert to have ankle surgery
(05-26-2016, 12:20 PM)Nate (formerly eliminate08) Wrote: Plus, who is going to cover Green, Lafell, Boyd, Kroft, Gio and company?

I'm trying to stay optimistic, but is this really supposed to sound like an "impossible to defend" lineup?

I know you are not as high on Lafell as i am but the dude has just as much production in the NFL as MLJ and Sanu combined.

He is a bigger body than either as well and is very good after the catch.

Boyd catches everything, great hands and smooth.

Kroft looked great last year in limited action and can block and catch. Just as big as Eifert, not the route runner but who is?

Gio is a great back to dump the ball off to, maybe the best.

Dalton has very good options and that is not even mentioning if one of Core, Alford, Russell or Kumerow show up.

I am not worried. Right now anyways.

I'm not saying Lafell/Boyd/Kroft can't hold down the fort and/or be good...I just thought your statement of "Who's going to cover them" seemed a bit overly optimistic.

Who can POSSIBLY cover a #1 WR, a FA, a rookie, and a backup TE?!  oof!

When you phrase it like this, it portrays these players as low draft picks or UDFAs.

The reality is that both LaFell and Kroft were former third-round picks. Boyd is a second-round rookie. They have talent and teams will not have an easy time covering all of them.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Yeah, maybe i stated it the wrong way, i just meant it is still a solid core. Green is always tough to cover one on one
unless it is Joe Haden. So if teams choose to double him it will open it up for one of these guys.

True that Ochocincos.

- No Tyler Eifert at all
- No Marvin Jones at all
- No Michael Johnson at all
- Burfict missed 11 games
- Atkins was a shell of himself (3 sacks)
- Maualuga missed 4 games
- AJ Green missed 4 games

Dalton turned in some really good games that year while playing with a receiver group that was headlined by Sanu, Gresh and Greg Little for pete's sake. Knock on wood, but 2016 can't possibly be as bad as 2014, and this team STILL got it done with Hill/Bernard, some timely good games from Dalton, and the defense bent (22nd in yards) but didn't completely break (12th in points allowed).

How is this all possible? Our QB sucks, and is only a product of the talent around him.

We hung 37 on a pretty good Carolina defense with pretty much everyone out.

Besides, that's just 4 games. Explain the rest.

Welp, that confirms it, he does suck. Ninja

Apparently Hewitt also just had a minor procedure done. Time for kroft and uz to get a lot of practice reps.

We did just sign a FB and drop that extra kicker so at least we have a FB for practice. (kinda had the Hewitt look to him)

For me, I just would like to know why they wanted to wait until now to do it. Nothing to do with being injured (it happens), just the timing of addressing the injury.

From Houshmandzadeh's analysis of Eifert last year when he helped pre-season, it's Eifert's speed that makes him freakish, so to speak.  If anything, that would be the missing ingredient with Kroft.

I get that, I just feel like every off season we tend to assume the Bengals are going to put together an offensive unit that makes NFL defenses just throw their hands in frustration and give up.  I'm just not used to seeing it in a thread discussing one of our best offensive players missing playing time.

Today, on Pro Football Talk, Mike Ryan, NBC Sports Medicine Analyst, talked about Tyler Eifert beginning at the 13:30 mark.

https://audioboom.com/boos/4618064-05-26-hour-two-peyton-manning-won-t-sue-al-jazeera?t=0

He says that Dr. Robert Anderson, an orthopedic foot and ankle specialist at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the head of the National Football League’s Foot and Ankle Subcommittee, is doing the surgery and that he is the best ankle doctor in the country.    He explains why surgery was delayed.  He says Tyler will wear a boot until August and may miss a few games, but no one knows.  It depends on how rehab goes.

Geoff Hobson says, “It’s believed that Anderson has consulted on the case from the get-go, starting when Eifert returned from Hawaii for a battery of tests.”

So it sounds like blaming the Bengals' medical staff is unfair.

Hobs really sounded the alarm on the radio just now. Sounding more and more likely he'll be out the start of the season. Said may not see Eifert at full health until mid season. Said only God knows when he'll return. Said injury devastating coupled with Burfict out first three games. A tough start to the season.

I'd be more worried if this team hadn't gone 10-5-1 without Eifert, Burfict and many others in 2014.

Maybe it's time for us to accept that the Bengals are one of the better run organizations in football, and it's going to take more than just a couple injuries to ruin a season. Just like how the Pats would win without Gronk, we can (and have) won without Eifert.

We're actually 12-6-1 without Eifert since we drafted him, and have averaged 23.9 ppg in those games...and that's also including a bunch of other players we've been missing during that span, including Dalton.

Yeah, Eifert can move no question.

The size of Kroft should help though, same size maybe even bigger.

Tim Wright just released by Lions. Probably worth a look if Eifert is going to miss time.

Moving The Chains has doctors on regularly to discuss injuries and such.

Yesterday the doc they had on said there was nothing unusual with this situation.

Without having seen the medical record, he could only speculate on the what the actual injury is, but his educated opinion was that it was a loose tendon and named the particular one that would be the offender.

The doctor said the typical approach would be to allow it to heal naturally (as was done), but if it was determined that it had not responded as desired at this point there are only two options.

The first is surgery, generally to detach and shorten the tendon, then re-attach it.  Typically they will also clean out the joint at the same time as they are in a great position to do so and it adds nothing to the recovery time.

The other option is to do nothing in hopes that it progresses on its own.  With the second option, the player can still play if his pain threshold allows it, however the tendon will make him much more susceptible to rolling and spraining the joint.

As Kirwan then pointed out, every good team would make the decision at this time to have the surgery now and possibly lose a key player for a couple of September games.  The bad teams, he said, would do nothing and have a key player for game one only to be coming out of the game regularly until mid-October, when they have to finally admit the surgery is a neccessity and IR him.
