Mixon and Malone catching eyes on first scrimmage (ESPN)

Quote:CINCINNATI -- The Bengals are less than a week out from their preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it's clear they're still very much a work in progress.

The Bengals held a scrimmage Saturday at Paul Brown Stadium in front of 11,000 fans, with the intention of giving some of the younger players their first taste of a game-like setting. The Bengals split up into two teams, with quarterback Andy Dalton and the first-team offense playing against the second-team defense.

Rookies Joe Mixon and Josh Malone were the highlight of the day, with Malone using his 6-foot-3, 208-pound frame to make several contested catches. Malone said his basketball background in high school helps him.

"I feel like it comes natural. I have a big frame," Malone said. "I think it was natural because of the basketball background and over the years learning how to use my frame."

While it's difficult to judge a running back without the benefit of live tackling, Mixon looked elusive and caught a short pass from Dalton for a touchdown.

Dalton also looked sharp, leading the team down the field for a 96-yard touchdown drive, capped by a touchdown pass to H-back Ryan Hewitt. Unofficially, Dalton completed 13-of-19 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

"I thought we moved the ball well," Dalton said. "Guys made plays. It’s one of those mock things. There’s no game-planning involved."

The offensive line looked better Saturday after completing one of its worst practices Friday. It still wasn't a perfect day for the unit. Dalton's touchdown pass was close to being called a sack after Chris Smith beat Cedric Ogbuehi to get in Dalton's face.

Because the quarterbacks aren't allowed to be touched, it was essentially a judgment call by the officials, but Dalton said he thought he got the ball off in time.

"Their coach wasn't real happy with them this morning," offensive line coach Paul Alexander said. "We've got a lot of work to do, but it was a heck of a lot better than it was the last couple days."

It was a learning day on special teams as well, as Jake Elliott and John Ross didn't have their best days. Ross never returned punts in college, so his fielding has been hit or miss.

Special-teams coordinator Darrin Simmons said Ross struggled to field punts when the sun was in his eyes. He's also learning to make the right judgments on when to field a punt and when to let it go.

"Those are all good things, so you get the cobwebs and some of that stuff worked out before you're actually playing live stuff," Simmons said. "And there are going to be things like that. Some of those things are going to happen. When you have a guy who is inexperienced and hasn't done it before, you're going to have some of that."

Rookie kicker Jake Elliott also missed a 52-yard field goal and a PAT.

"It was just a bad hit. No excuses. It faded right on me," Elliott said.

The Bengals will get the day off Sunday and return to practice Monday at 3 p.m.

Kicking updates: Elliott made a 32-yarder and was wide left from 52 yards but recovered to make a 51-yarder later in the practice. Randy Bullock was good from 40, 35 and 52 yards and made his PAT.

Plays of the day: Dalton found tight end Tyler Eifert over the middle for a gain of more than 20 yards after Eifert made a nice reach to stretch out for the ball. ... Carlos Dunlap and Carl Lawson each sacked AJ McCarron. ... Wille Clarke batted down a pass from Dalton intended for Malone. ... Clint Boling sprung Jeremy Hill for a nice gain for the second straight day. ... Dalton faked to Hill and found A.J. Green for a nice gain. ... Brandon Bell almost had an interception but couldn't hang on to the ball.

I have a feeling we found a gem with Malone.

Forgot we got Chris Smith, damn deep at End all of a sudden. Boling being 100% this year is huge, i truly believe
he was the better Guard to keep out of him and Zeitler cause Boling is a very good run blocker.

Man, Lawson just won't let up will he? Lol, sounds like the man is on a mission. Cannot wait to see him rush the
Pig in the Pitt. Expecting a huge year out of Dalton and Mixon.

Malone does remind me of Chris Henry. Glad he is improving cause he is still a little raw on his routes.

Hearing Ross fielding Punts is a bit of a surprise. I wouldn't put him in those situations if i was the coach but it
could be a good sign on his shoulder and he should be all ready to go against the Ratbirds.

Marvin said Lawson will be unleashed and Lawson said he's basically playing with a chip on his shoulder. I'm so hyped for this season, I have a feeling it will be special.

Mixon is the real deal. If you have not seen him in camp, the guy has hue guns, looks quicker and faster than Hill and other backs.

On defense, we keep heating Chris Smith's name so Sims or others may be in trouble to make the 53. Rookie Glasglow as well

With the way they're talking up Tra Carson on the website, I'd say it might be time for Hill to be worried since Mixon is looking good. People keep saying we'll keep him because he's cheap and is good for the goal line carries, but I think this team is ready to move on from Hill and his happy feet, fumble away an entire organization/city/fan-base's glory-self.

Mixon looks like the real deal and there's no reason not to go all-in with him, especially for how it will energize the team and fanbase because everyone still has a sour taste in their mouth from the fumble. Does anyone else's Mac wait until you've typed a few words after "Mixon" and autocorrect it to "Nixon"? It's annoying as hell.

Keep four backs: 1. Mixon 2. Gio 3. Peerman for special teams (if his hamstring is ok) 4. Tra. Tra seems more like a out-of-the-backfield catcher like Gio, and they might want to keep him as they ease in Gio.

I love that Malone is looking good because I think he needs to put on a little weight, but I keep saying that I love to have him and AJ opposite each other in the red zone to throw jump balls to either one.

The line is apparently looking a bit better, which they still scare me, but that does make me feel a little better.

I'd keep Boom Williams over Tra Carson. We keep hearing about Lawson, but not a peep about how Billings is doing this year. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

You do realize the reason folks are "talking up" Carson is because he's having to take extended snaps because Mixon has a bad heel and Gio is coming back from ACL. So ask yourself: In that scenario does it make sense that the team is more motivated to cut Hill because of Carson's extra reps. 

Hill is here and he's playing out his contract (unless traded). I remember folks saying we're gonna cut Benson to give Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard more touches or we're going to cut BJGE to give Burkhead and Gio more carries. The Bengals are going to hold on to the proven workhorse until someone else proves he can be that workhorse.

To be fair, the bengals did cut BJGE with a year left on his contract because of the addition of Hill. I was actually surprised when it happened.
Speaking of BJGE, I'm surprised he only played six seasons. I thought for sure he'd latch on with another team after being cut by the Bengals. He's 32 now though, so no chance he could make a return.
