Lots of people comparing the 2012 season when we started 3-5 and ended up making the playoffs at 10-6 to the current season. Below are comparisons between 2012 and 2016 through the first eight games.
Category 2012/2016
Points Scored/Game 23.6/20.9
Total Yards/Game 355.5/395.4
Pass Yards/Game 259.5/275.1
Rush Yards/Game 95.9/120.3
Turnovers Surrendered 16/8
20+ Points Scored 5/4
Points Allowed/Game 27.3/23.6
Total Yards Allowed/Game 357.4/378.5
Pass Yards Allowed/Game 240.4/262.4
Rush Yards Allowed/Game 117/116.1
Turnovers Generated 11/10
20+ Points Surrendered 6/6
The 2012 team was scoring fewer points while giving up more points through the first eight games. The current squad is surrendering more yards, but have been taking care of the ball a lot better than the 2012 team.
In the final eight games of the 2012 season the Bengals surrendered only 12.8 points/game while scoring 25.3. Additionally, they surrendered only 10 turnovers while generating 19. I suppose those clinging to this season as their sign of hope may have a point in terms of the numbers. The one thing that is not reflected in the above numbers is the pass rush. The 2012 team finished with 50 sacks and had two players (Atkins and Johnson) finish with more than 10 sacks. So far in 2016 the Bengals are on pace for 32 sacks, with only one player (Dunlap) on pace to get 10 or more.
