AJ McCarron is a future star
A. McCarron 11/15 97 6.5 0 0 1-11 90.1
A. Dalton 6/13 46 3.5 0 2 3-22 15.7

Let me get this straight-

Andy Dalton looks like an incompetent loser yet again in a football game, McCarron comes in and leads the team to the only TD of the game with 3rd string scrubs at his disposal, and McCarron has a weak arm and is nothing more than a backup QB?

McCarron wasn't exactly lighting it up.  He was playing dink and dunk ball because their D was in a prevent.  Even Dalton can do that.  I saw nothing special about McCarron.  He might be serviceable at some time in his career.

Could be right.....and you're about the comparison to Dalton.....but man, he made Andy look like Marino.... Smirk

I kept waiting for that annoying dog to come up on the screen and giggle......

Not arguing about the arm last night, but I think that will improve.  He hasn't played in over a year.

Meanwhile he took his team right down the field and scored with horrendous protection, and overcoming his own miscues.   The guy is smart and mentally tough.  I was pretty excited about his performance actually, though I don't expect him to suddenly be the great franchise hope.   I think he's a little more than the standard NFL back up

How many of those QBs threw their first preseason football passes Monday night? How many of them sat out last year with a bad shoulder? How many of them are the surefire #2 QBs on their teams with their organizations cutting the #3 QBs after their performance?

I do not understand the negativity towards McCarron, everything he does is constantly downplayed by you guys like he's done nothing, meanwhile every pathetic Dalton performance gets a free pass and blame is placed on everybody else.

You don't know what McCarron could be. We all know what Dalton is. Postseason failure awaits. I look forward to another year of excuses for Andy wetting the bed when it matters most.

I may be less than thrilled with Dalton right now, but McCarron looked terrible. He's not the answer.

I agree.  I will admit that I'm tickled pink that JJJJJJJJJ Johnson is gone and we can see more McCarron going forward, though.

I'm not seeing a lot of negativity toward McCarron.  I'm just seeing people be realistic.  McCarron has played in exactly ONE preseason game against 3rd stringers who were playing a PREVENT defense.  Surely you aren't saying the McCarron did something special on Monday...

In the NFL, he has done close to nothing.

BTW.  Dalton for sure does not get free passes on this board.  He's knocked from pillar to post all the bloody time.

It's only one game. Dalton has had some stellar games. We need to see McCarron on the field more to really know anything.

I do believe we'll see McCarron during the regular season this year and in a situation where the team needs him to bring them back.

The bigger and more unspoken issue with McCarron is his health. Can he stay healthy for an entire season?

I don't see them putting McCarron in during the reg season unless Andy gets hurt.

Yeah the only ways Lewis puts in McCarron are:
1. if Dalton gets injured
2. we're way behind with only minutes left in the game (like down 3 TDs with 2 minutes to go in the game)
3. we're way ahead with only minutes left in the game (like up 3 TDs with 2 minutes to go in the game)

2 and 3 aren't even guarantees. I've seen Lewis keep the starting QB in in those sitations as well.

Personally, I'd like to see McCarron play a full game or at least a half in week 17 and possibly even week 16.

Wouldn't it be amazing as Bengals fans to see us have the entire conference locked up by the year's end like that? A man can dream at least!

Did you watch the game or just view stats?

I wanted us to draft McCarron, I like and still think AJ can be a good back up QB and possible starter someday in the NFL. But, he did not look good. He had no zip. He threw a lot of wounded ducks and everything deep was no velocity, wobbly and under thrown. He went 80 yards against the Bucs 4th string defense late in the game padding the stats.

I think your hatred towards AD has made you lose all objectivity. You are going to ignore Dalton's 40 wins in 4 years? Why?

I hope AJ progresses, but any objective fan watching that game would not be happy with either QB, but less happy with AD as he made AJ's arm look like a high school QB in that game if you compared the two.

I am so ready for 2024 season. I love pro football and hoping for a great Bengals year. Regardless, always remember it is a game and entertainment.

This can't be argued. I can't understand why fans use pre-season to evaluate anything other than roster spot capability. I see good and bad by players who are studs in pre-season. Heck, the AJ Green non catch and pick 6 was brutal, but it does mean AJ is not a great WR for example.

My first post.  Andy is like the current Cincinnati Reds .. Stale .. and so Predictable..
To say that AJ looked terrible is not being honest.  He threw 1 bad ball.  And for
a guy that hasn't played in so long I thought he looked poised, under control, and
provided a sense of leadership and trustworthiness.   Truthfully, and reading between
the lines of some Bengal teammates comments, I believethey think he should be the guy right
now.  Personally, I don't think they trust Andy.   And Andy having to be a "fake" leader to
appease the coaches is absolutely ridiculous.  I think AJ has a future here and it may come
sooner than many realize.
