Alex Van Pelt Factor
#1
From the reports i'm reading/watching, Andy has come out sharp, having his best TC maybe of his entire career. I have to think that this improvement is directly related to the acquisition of Alex Van Pelt as the QB coach.

Think about this, Ken Zampese was the QB coach of the Bengals from 2003-2015. We often talk about how Paul Alexander had a free ride here, well it's the same with Zamp. I would say we had a less than mediocre QB coach ALL of these years. I never noticed much growth from the QB position with either Palmer or Dalton, other than when the offensive coordinator/system changed.

Finally, we get a new QB coach and not some bum off the street. We get a guy who has been in the ear of arguably the best performing QB in the league from 2014-2017 Now, Rodgers was plenty good before Van Pelt got there, don't get me wrong, but working with a guy like Rodgers raises your standards. I think Van Pelt is coming in here and preaching the right mechanics/mindset to take Andy to that next level.

I'm not sure we even had a QB coach last year after Zamp left. I'm excited about having someone Andy can lean on for help, as when you think about it, he never has really had anyone other than Hue and Jay, who were also controlling the entire offense.

Having a knowledgeable coach dedicated to keeping Andy on track is going to do wonders for this team.

Definately showing isn't it?

Van Pelt has also helped some QB's that were just not very good to having their best seasons as pros. Josh Freeman
and another QB who i can never remember, but i mean he has not just worked with Rodgers. These new coaches were
some great additions and it is really showing out there especially with Dalton and the Receivers.

Bicknell needs to be mentioned here who has done wonders with the Receivers it seems. Ross, Boyd, Tate, Erickson
all have been having a great camp and Core scored 2 TD's today.

I think the improved line and quality weapons have as much to do with it. Dalton was an MVP candidate in 2015 with KZ as his QB coach.

Zampese was a good OB coach who was lost as an OC.

Kitna played for four different NFL teams and had the best season of his career under Zampese in 2003 when we won the ranked 9th in passer rating, 3dr in passing tds and won NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

Palmer played for three different NFL teams and also had the best season of his career under Zampese in 2005 when he finished 1st in passing tds, 2nd in passer rating, and 4th in yards. Two of his three Pro Bowl seasons were under Zampese.

Andy Dalton was a second round pick, but he has gone to three Pro Bowls under Zampese and that does not include 2015 when he had a 106.2 passer rating.

Knew you would be right in this thread Fred. Good stuff, but good old Alex Van Pelt has an even better resume. Wink

I'm sorry to even ask this question and am ashamed in advance, but did anyone ever watch the TV series "Mentalist". Whenever I'm thinking about Alex van Pelt, I associate it with that. Anyone else facing that problem.

Kitna - Only improved his completion percentage by .1% with the addition of Zamp. He was comeback player of the year after a 2-14 season.

Palmer - best season of his career was 2015 with Arizona.

Andy - I'm an Andy believer, I think he overcame the Zamp  Cool

Either way, be excited for Van Pelt. Dalton can pick his brain with Aaron Rodgers film and learn a lot. He should improve. Get excited!

Football coaches, as they relate to players is a bit of a generational thing.  Not every coach and player can mesh well enough on a personal level to have the appropriate communication needed for building success.  I'm sure that Zamp is a fine Xs and Os guy, but obviously he wrote a worded down game plan that lead to his demise as OC.

The best coaches aren't always the ones with the most brilliant mind, but the ones that can communicate best to tweak the little things that lead to better execution of the basics.

I'm glad we have Van Pelt and I'm glad Z is gone. I'll just leave it at that.

I always wondered why the Bengals didn't keep Kenny Anderson as QB coach. He seemed to have lit a fire under a certain QB in Pittsburgh whose had a pretty darn good career under center over the years.

Agreed. I think Zampese gets a bad wrap because of how he finished.

Still says something when Rodgers complains about losing Van Pelt.

Not like Carson Palmer and Andy Dalton were terrible QB's with no talent either.

Van Pelt has been raving about Dalton's accuracy.

I'll be happy if the only thing Van Pelt does is fix Dalton throwing the ball 5 yds out of bounds on deep routes. But hey, I'm easy to please.

As a former QB himself, I think it helps in relation to understanding where your QB is coming from, and vice versa.

Some of those are probly throw aways....  just putting in the general direction.  (then he sees the WR come open late after the ball is already loose and that's when he grimances...)
