I'm with you. While I enjoyed the talent between the white lines, to me it seemed like often times tried too hard to be clever.

As far as his remedy...i take most of the stuff he says with a grain of salt. He was probably just trying to be funny.

They didn't want him around AJ Green.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

Nah, that's just hard science. I guess.

I didn't like everything the guy did. I still shutter at thoughts of the HOF jacket nonsense. Still, there was more about Chad that I liked than disliked. As time goes by I remember more of the good than the bad. Had the best feet in the business.

Was entertaining for awhile, but took his nonsense too far. He turned into a total diva who failed to back up the garbage that spewed from his mouth. I don't miss any of that. Too often disappeared against better corners or in meaningful games. Talented, yes.....but also overrated.

I can't believe we're revisiting this again.

Chad is definitely not overrated.

He just craved more to be an entertainer than finish with style.

I'd bet he would be the first to admit that he wished it didn't happen that way.

Hell even TJ, that was loved by everyone, wishes he would have done things differently with our team.

Yes Chad was replaced with a rookie.  The same rookie that draft experts claimed was a no brainer NFL ready WR.

Why can't they both be great?

I respect the hell out of Chad and how he played.

That guy got layed out, and probably got more concussions going after passes in Bengals history.

Do I miss him?  Sure do.  He helped pull our team out of the trash heap it had become.

AJ Green and Geno Atkins have brought zero playoff victories to Cincinnati. Doesn't make them less valuable or less good.

All current QUARTERBACKS and coaches are held to that standard. Records only follow QBs, Coaches, and Owners (but really only Owners if they've been really good or really bad). I can easily find online the Bengals record when Dalton is starting. I can easily go online and find the Bengals record when Lewis has been coach. I can't easily find the record for the Bengals when Green or Atkins have started. Just how it is.

"and zero playoff wins with what some would say one of the all time greatest QBs in history".... nobody has EVER called Jon Kitna, Carson Palmer, or Ryan Fitzpatrick one of the all time greatest QBs in history. Those are the three QBs that Chad has had throw passes to him for the Bengals. Unless you're talking about the one season at the end of his career where he was clearly washed up and done, having lost a step... but still ended up in a Super Bowl and had a catch in it with Tom Brady and the Patriots.

EDIT: I don't think you appreciate how good Chad Johnson was. He didn't do much his rookie year (why he was a second round pick instead of a top-5 or top-10 pick) but here's how he lines up against AJ Green in their first 5 seasons in the NFL.

Chad Johnson '01-'05*:
379 / 5,556 / 34

*15 total 4,000+ yard passing seasons, 0 total 5,000+ yard passing seasons in that time span.

AJ Green '11-'15*:
415 / 6,171 / 45

*53 total 4,000+ yard passing season, 6 total 5,000+ yard passing seasons in that time span.

.....and that's with Chad putting up only 28 / 329 / 1 in his rookie year. If Chad were a rookie the same year as AJ and Julio, he would be likely crushing both of them right now.
.......................................................................................................................................................
...............................................................................................................................................................................................
1) Was only using other peoples standards with playoff wins. Plus Geno and AJ have not played 11 years yet.

2) Once again referring to other peoples standards. Am very vocal that Carson was not the greatest QB or even amongst them. Tom Brady is and nobody on here said Chad was washed up when he left. That is an excuse. Most even wanted him back and none said washed up. But believe Brady said something about his route running and ability to absorb playbook. But hang your hat on that one SB catch.

3) Appreciate Chad and purchased 4 tickets to every single game he played. Went hoarse cheering for him many of days. He brought to my seats 3 TD balls, set of game worn cleats off his feet, gloves, and came and shake hands with my friend before every game of the 2009 year as well for buying him a hot dog for a sideline stunt during game. Good deal and he is a cool dude for doing such but a team distraction. Believe also this was a ploy to get back in good fan graces for demanding a trade that off season. But benefitted greatly from it.

4) Think Geno and AJ Green will be in Hall of Fame and Ocho will certainly not be. Time will tell though. You may only care about individual stats but I care about who makes the team better. Not who can get in the spotlight the most. But understand the younger generation is more of a microwave and look at me society. Just old school I guess. Actually am just old.

5) Seems like we differ a lot and have no hard feelings with you or any other true Bengals fans. Sorry if it ever seems as such. Loved Chad but eventually his antics wore on me somewhat when the Bengals were losing and he was showboating or giving next weeks team chalkboard material just to get in the news. It started when he got in the fight with coaches at halftime of the steelers playoff game that Bengals were leading in up until this point. Team came out flat, everybody blames the injuries. But this is when teams pull together instead of focusing on themselves and then it turned other direction when he demanded trade.

Think he had all the potential to be one of the best of all time if he would have been a team player instead of a moth to the spotlight. A lot more of this showed in retirement, porno, wife beating, reality show, and canadian football flop.

he became more a player that I still loved, but just did not like him anymore.

Know I am very stubborn and opinionated. But really do not hold any grudges with the Carson or Chad nation.

Was once amongst them. That ship has sailed though and will always debate other side.

Maybe if we ever win one it will be alleviated. But believe we had all the potential in the world with these guys if they ever would have really bought in.

We will always disagree most likely on this. Understand and that is ok.

All current players and coaches seem to be held to this standard. Why the pass for Chad ?

Chad Johnson came to a Bengals team that was 4-12, won 68 (6.8 avg per yr) games in 10 years and took the Bengals to 2 playoff appearances and zero playoff wins with what some would say one the all time greatest QB's in history firing ball to him. He went to the playoffs in 20% of the years he played here.

Replaced by rookie WR with rookie QB throwing that came to a 4-12 team as well. Have won 52 (10.4 avg per yr) games in five years, going to the playoffs in all 5 seasons. Have gone to playoffs 100% of the years.

Loved watching Chad play but question whether he made Bengals a better team. When you showboat hard you must accept the criticism if you do not produce at days end.

Also was given the chance by New England to prove his worth on a SB caliber team and failed to deliver. Tom Brady disagrees with the love of Chad and have to give his opinion more weight.

From 2002-2010 - when Chad actually played - the Bengals won 62 games total. That translates to an average record of 7-9. Not great, but maybe you missed the 90's (I know you didn't, but you're acting like you did)? We were a heck of a lot worse than 7-9 back then. The big thing here is that he was the arguably the MVP of a pair of division champs. Coming out of the 90's, who would've thought a pair of division titles would be possible?

Chad was a giant piece (perhaps the biggest piece) of the Bengals teams that led us out of the abyss. Maybe after 5 straight playoff performances, it's easy to shrug off what those 2003-09 teams were able to accomplish. They didn't win as consistently as the current group, but I still appreciate what they were able to accomplish in leading this franchise back to respectability. As AJ Green said about Chad, "they paved the way".

As for why I don't hold Chad to the "playoff win standard", I don't hold the lack of playoff wins against any players. Not Chad, Carson, Andy, Green, Atkins, Burfict, etc. I've consistently blamed the guy that coached 2 different core groups of talented players to an 0-7 playoff record.
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.

There is a very good chance that Chad suffers from brain trauma.  He was going over the middle and getting blown up for years and never missing a game. Saw he get put in an ambulance one week and strap on the helmet the next.

It is insane the amount of disrespect he gets from Bengal fans.

As to the OP: Hell yes I miss him.

Isn't the sad truth that Bengals fans can probably count on one hand the players we actually celebrate and/or miss? We like Ken Anderson, Anthony Munoz, and maybe a handful of players no one outside of Cincy has heard of. Boomer and Cris are noted Bengals but we don't like them for bashing the Bengals, Carson...well that's obvious, Chad is a goofball who never won a playoff game, and so on and so forth.

Chad Johnson and Hines Ward seem pretty similar to me. One is celebrated by Pittsburgh and the general populace and one is a big ol' joke. The difference? Wins, I guess. Ok, I'm being cynical, but lordy we don't even like our own players so how do we expect the media to like the Bengals at all?

Oh yeah without a doubt i miss that guy. Probably my favorite Bengal of all time actually. I still follow him on FB and often worry about him because he posts some outlandish shit even for Chad. I feel he most likely has permanent brain damage as well and that makes me sad. I still display his action figure with pride.

Of course I miss Chad Johnson. He was great and made the Bengals watchable. Sure he could be a little goofy but let's not forget they're playing a GAME. I would've loved to see what we could've done with Chad and AJ.

That look though. TO wouldn't take him serious but he was awfully quiet.

However, he was a great player and I think he would have had a much better ending as far as his career is concerned in a Bengals uniform. When he left to go to the Patriots that just made things terrible. He couldn't even be himself and things just went downhill from there. If we can only reverse time and have Chad and AJ together with this Bengals team today.

I think his attitude stinks however he was a great receiver. I was watching "first take", and they were telling Chad and OT that the reason why it will take them a long time to become hall of famer's is because their atittude was always "ME ME ME ME" and they never worried as much about how it'll impact the team. That they never lifted their teams rather put them down and that's why TO got skipped.  TO and Chad sat there just staring and smiling and to some extent agreed and of course disagreed in other matters.

I think Chad was great. Love the guy even though he's weird.

Brandon Phillips, for all his antics, plays hard every game.

Whether or not Chad actually gave up or not...it gave the appearance of it.

Wanna know how to get the city of Charlie Hustle to turn on you? Look like you aren't trying hard while being paid millions to play a game.

That's exactly what I watched today. On First Talk, when he was at the panel with T.O. He was told that he was always thinking about himself and not the team and that isn't a hall of fame caliber player. They were both given the same message and of course eventually they'll get hall of fame but it'll take a while like Chris Carter.

The thing that always gets me is when people wish AJ Green "had more swagger" or "fought for the ball" to make him elite.

Then turn around and say how Chad was "overrated" even though he did all of those things they wished AJ would do.

Think about it.

Polar opposites in terms of personality but both great none the less.

That's a good point, but I go back to the franchise/winning effect on this one.  James Harrison went to a division rival because he wanted more money, nothing else, but he goes back "home" a year later and they have a flippin' parade for him.  Hines Ward goes on Dancing with the Stars while his on the field play is absolute free-fall and the same people who criticized Chad for being on there just go ga-ga for Hines' charisma....etc.

So Steelers players can go to division rivals for more money, work on dance routines while their production plummets, but all is forgiven.  The Bengals?  Geez, I know I'm sort of biased but you have to wonder why a franchise has so many noteworthy players speak out, or just plain ask to be let go.  Again, I don't think Bengals fans SHOULD be thinking fondly of Carson, Chad, Boomer, Corey if they don't want to, but it has really fostered a sort of culture where we praise the hell out of the guys here RIGHT NOW and turn on them as soon as they even think of going elsewhere.

That's just poor brand management on Mike Brown's part, because a Steelers fan gets more pleasure out of thinking of the classic players on a single team in one single year than we get from nearly 50 years of football.  Perhaps if Green, Dalton, Eifert etc. get it together and win it all and/or leave on good terms we will finally have some sort of decent sized hall of fame, though.  At the moment it's like the Bengals are the RC Cola of the NFL world:  when people think of established brands like Coke (the Steelers, the Steel Curtain, etc), or edgier but still old school Pepsi (the Patriots, etc.) and RC Cola is all about drinking it because it's there (liking the Bengals players here NOW and if they want more money to go to Cleveland, to hell with them!).

Ok, well I hate soda so that wasn't the best metaphor to use.  Anyways, poor brand management when something that's been around for 50 years brings about relatively few long-term pleasant feelings with long-term users.  Some of us watched Boomer Esiason make this team the most exciting one to watch at one point, and get us one dropped INT from world champions but many of us feel less positive vibes about the guy than a 13 year old feels about Franco Harris even though he's never seen him play.

That might say it all.  Or not.  I should get some real work done here.
