Do Bengals Keep 7 WR's?
#41
With the injury carousel we’ve had at WR for the last month+ we probably should keep 7. Two will probably be hurt on any given Sunday

I agree as well and I'm not sure why it's like that.

You dress 5 on game days. Three starters AJ, Ross, Boyd the last two need to play special teams if Alex Erickson continues as the punt returner they need that final WR spot to play gunner.

Auden Tate, Stanley Morgan, and Michael Thomas have experience on special teams. Tee Higgins doesn't.

This.

If they only keep 7 then Thomas is out.  They say he is having a good camp, but apparently so are 60 other guys.  We can't keep every player they say is looking good.

In the TC report Tee was playing ST's...

So with Green, Boyd, and Higgins being locks along with Tate and Thomas reportedly doing very well, do you think Erickson makes it in over any of them? I don't think Ross is a cut candidate either since he's guaranteed his remaining contract ($5.5 mill) and put up nearly the same yards (506 vs 529) but 3 more TDs than Erickson in half the games last year.

I wouldn't take Erickson over any of Green, Boyd, Higgins, Tate, or Ross but I'd take him over a 4th TE or RB.

And this is where it will become interesting.  Seems to me the final spot is a battle between Erickson and Thomas.  Both play ST but have different roles in ST.  Erickson had one really big game (the scrimmage) and Thomas has been pretty solid.  We know the Bengals like Cethan Carter and they will obviously have Sample and Uzomah.

I guess I could see a scenario where they only go with 3 TEs, but I would imagine they will keep 4 RBs (Mixon, Gio, Williams, and Perine...or maybe the kid from the XFL, but I think Perine is the best at ST.

Maybe they try to carry Stanley Morgan, Jr and Mike Thomas on the PS since Erickson is still listed as a WR2 on the depth chart (Thomas is a WR3) and Erickson is the #1 PR.

I can't see any way that Tee is sitting on game day. I guess if he's injured, but I just can't see that happening too often.

Who do you sit then?
Can't sit Green or Boyd, probably shouldn't sit Ross or Tate.
If you keep Erickson, you probably need him active for returns.

If you keep 6 WRs active, you'd only likely be able to have two active RBs and two active TEs.

I think if everyone is 100% week 1, and assuming they go with six, you could see a scenario where they have someone else return punts over Erickson and they take Green, Ross, Boyd, Higgins, Tate, and Stanley Morgan, Jr.

We shouldn't discount how important a quality ST guy like Morgan will be without preseason games and Erickson, while valuable at PR, doesn't play the coverage unit.

Gio, Phillips and Boyd are all good Punt Returners which doesn't help Erickson...

Morgan is a very willing blocker which also doesn't help him.

I don't think they risk Boyd returning punts, since he is #1 if AJ gets hurt.

I agree, just think there is going to be a tough cut on Offense and it might be Erickson.

Completely agree. But from all accounts I've seen, is it not expected that Mike Thomas (who plays the same ST role that Morgan does) is ahead of Morgan because he's also a better WR?

I think they both make it and Erickson is sent packing...

Health can turn on a dime, but I wonder if the Bengals couldn't get a 5th round pick from the Jets for Erickson...You would have to think it would be a fairly early 5th rounder as well.

If there isn't some trade, I still don't see Erickson being released.

I could see WRs of AJ, Ross, Boyd, Tate, Higgins, Erickson, and Thomas with Stanley Morgan on the PS.  I am not sure some team would take Morgan if they have to put him on their active roster mainly for his special team prowess.  I think Thomas may be as good as Morgan on the ST and is a far better weapons as a receiver.

The real challenge will be:  who dresses?  Even with expanded gameday rosters.

That would be ideal rather than cutting him...

Man, it sure is going to be tough. Lots of ways this can go.

What further complicates things is that Simmons has said in interviews that you can't play Tate as you would a WR on ST's due to his lack of speed.  You have to play him where you would normally play a TE.  However, if they only keep 3 TE's to carry 7WR's, it makes sense to dress Tate in case you need him to sub for one of the TE's on ST's.

I'm taking Thomas and Morgan over Erickson with the final roster cuts. People keep saying how reliable Erickson is as a return specialist but with 14 career fumbles in his short career. We have elite return men that can replace him in a second. Also as a receiver Erickson is ok as a slot guy but thats all he offers you. Thomas definitely isn't making the PS and needs to be on final roster. Get a late rd pick for Erickson if u can and move on.

It's not.hard to replace a kick returner with zero TDS for his career. He's had 3 years to show playmaking ability.

With Gio seeing some special teams action on the punt team just give him some reps as a punt returner if you don't want to risk Phillips with us being light at corner.  With us so deep at receiver id hate to see a return specialist taking the spot of a Tee Higgins on GameDay.
