Let's talk DT's

They really need to end the Hunt failed experiment as well. I still have some hope for Clarke, but he has to show some real progress this year.

There's like one legit speed rusher (Noah Spence) and he'll probably be off the board. Hardison is a decent piece to the puzzle but the fact he couldn't see any action this year despite very mediocre years from every DT not named Geno...a little depressing. Hopefully he's given a full chance.

Hunt should be long gone. Clarke is at best a poor man's MJ. Whatever that's worth...he shouldn't feel THAT comfortable on the roster.

As of right now we have Atkins, Peko, Williams, and Hardison. Peko is in the last year of his deal and needs fewer snaps to play with any of effectiveness. We know very little with Hardison and Williams. Thompson is recovering from a torn ACL and is visiting Seattle. I'm sure we'll bring Sims back at some point when we'll offer up another 1 year minimum deal.

This is the perfect year to draft a DT or two.

Agreed entirely.
Strong draft means double dip, not wait until the mid-late rounds.

Statements like this make me wonder what Hobson would say. Obviously he's trying to help the team when it comes to their awful smokescreen tactics, but I'm trying to wonder who'd he draft. As of right now Hobson thinks that we'll wait until later rounds for a WR because we got Sanu and Jones in the 3rd and 5th. No need to take a DT early because the coaches like Peko (that's seriously his reasoning). His "mock" had us going with Vonn Bell at 24.

I know Hobsy has a woody for 1st round CBs, but it seems like we can apparently wait on our biggest needs, according to him.

It would be very Bengal-like to think we can keep replicating success of late round picks.

Last year DT was a need and first round pick.
Now it can wait...nothing has changed. We still need that DT lol

NO IT'S NOT.

Nothing Hobson writes surprises me even more. It's always good for a laugh. If we take a CB, he likes the idea of taking William Jackson from Houston. Why does he like Jackson? He went to a JUCO and then played two years at an FBS school. Similar to Johnathan Joseph.

That's it.

Since he's so inclined to look back to the past to justify poor decisions, I would guess he bets against the team he works for in the playoffs because they've lost the last 7 of them they've played in.

He expects us to run the dime every snap so we need as many first round CBs as possible

I would easily put Leonard Floyd ahead of Spence for pure speed rusher and there are others, but that's for another time. I too hope we go DT in the first 3 rounds.

I really don't think Leonard Floyd is special as a speed rusher. He's better off the ball IMO. Could he occasionally rush? Yes but I don't think it maximizes his skill set.

I could see Floyd as SAM on rushing downs and moving to RDE on passing downs. He played with his hand in the dirt plenty at UGA.  I also consider Shil Calhoun to be ahead of Spence, but I realize I'm pretty much flying solo on that one.

I think an Edge rusher is a huge need for this team, maybe more than DT.

This year I have an even bigger crush on Andrew Billings. Dude would be a terrific pick if he falls to 24. That said I won't be nearly as upset if he doesn't because of the insane depth at DT in this draft.

Also (at risk of being labeled an OSU homer) I will say that Adolphus Washington would be a good pickup in th first two rounds and you didn't mention him.

Also I think it was bfine who mocked the Texas DT Ridgeway to us in the 4th, i didn't know much about him but after looking at some tape he could be a steal outside of the first couple rounds.

If we re-sign most of our major FA's I really hope we grab two good DT's in this draft. There are probably 15 DT's that could be really good pickups and last year only 18 were drafted. I'm sure that number will go up this year but some really talented guys should be available in rounds 3,4, or 5. If we don't draft a DT this year I will  Cry

I looked back at his pre-draft articles from years past a few days ago, and it's crazy how wrong he is. I think his article this month had us taking Vonn freaking Bell. However he has hit a couple of times that surprised me.

He hit on Ced Ogbuehi somehow in at least one of his articles, though he did reference Lap talking about it.

it seems Hobs is just as bad as some of the nationwide experts i.e. Daniel Jerimiah, and just make up stuff that is very out of character for the Bengals.

Multiple analysts have us taking braxton Miller in the first. Oh The bengals routinely reach overvalued project players? No, that's just laziness because of the proximity of the Bengals to OSU.

And we can always count on WalterFootball pegging us to reach for a character concern player because "The Bengals don't care about character issues, lets be lazy and use this as a placeholder while we have no idea WTF we are talking about, and don't want to do the least bit of research."

The fact that they gave Chris carter a few snaps as a rush specialist gives me a sliver of hope that they might actually use a high pick on a speed rusher.

....but only a sliver......

If we don't re-sign Gilberry I am afraid we will be in trouble with Clarke and Hunt as our #3 and #4 DEs.

And I don't want to see Hardison at DE.  He needs to concentrate on developing into a DT.

Ok so I see a lot of fallacy in mind sets when it comes to drafting that defy's logic. I keep hearing things like " we should draft a WR in the later rounds because we had success with Jones and Sanu "; The real issue is that their WR class was deep with talent which is why we drafted them later and still had success. This class is not a deep WR class in fact most consider it the worse class of wide receivers in recent memory. On the other hand this is the deepest class of Defensive Tackles in recent memory so logic would dictate that we could take a guy in the 2nd or 3 round that in other years would be a first round talent. Historically this club has had success drafting Defensive tackles out of the first round and I assume we will see that again this year. Im almost certain that we will see a skill position come off the board in the first round with a wide receiver or corner back. While corner is not an immediate need our club has shown that having a deep roster of first round corners is a positive thing to do when the league is focused on the passing game. All the NFL ready receivers and corners will be gone by the end of round two if not round one and it makes more sense to spend the pick on someone we can't get later.

That said I am not here to argue the merit of what we should spend our first pick on, but if we do pick a defensive tackle in round 1 then which should it be ? The guy who stands out to me in round 1 is Billings all day long. The guy just flashes talent to me along with hard work ethic. Robinson is body beautiful, but the guy rubs me as someone who has succeeded on natural talent without having to work hard. Mark my words the guy we want in this draft is billings and with him next to Atkins will be a nightmare for offensive lines. He is also a young guy who can learn how to be a pro from peko and atkins. Rankins is another guy who fills that need as a 4/3 nose and has similar strengths to billings in that department.

As for later round guys Sheldon Day would be my go to guy if my coaching staff feels like they could put some more positive muscle on him. I like his hands and he has a great leadership quality that any team would want. The only question for me is can he bulk his body enough to be a true 4/3 nose.
