I don't think my above posts support an inference that "they did not care if Trump knew what they were doing."  (Or maybe I misunderstand your wording.)  They definitely wanted Trump to know they supported him and wanted to "work with" the U.S.

"Working with" Trump would be a way to influence his actions. Hence the many contacts with campaign personnel, as part of a broad front of attempts to influence the U.S. government on a number of fronts. 

I just doubt the Russians would make a point of claiming to Trump's face that they won the election for him, and so he owed them. 

I have not closed out the possibility Putin has compromat, as well, or, so far as Trump knows, COULD have it.
