Mike Daniels Re-signs

Here's my thing I'm always optimistic.  I've been optimistic about the Reds since about 1983 and if anything the Reds have sucked worse than the Bengals since the 90's.

I do agree with Ocho's remark though.  I see better than I hear.  You can tell me your plan.  You can tell me the intended results of your plan but if your plan doesn't show results then your plan doesn't work.

6-25-1 says to me your plan doesn't work.  A "good" coach would've assembled a coaching staff to take advantage of the talent that was currently in place and change to a zone defense over time.  Not bring in a coaching staff and be like well our talent doesnt match our scheme want to run but hell lets run a zone defense anyway.

I think that's been my biggest issue with Taylor and his staff is not using the talent that was in place and changing over time.  Change to your plan.  if you don't have the talent to immediately switch to a zone defense then why in the hell are you brining in a DC who wants to run a zone scheme.

Isn't Daniels more of a NT rather than a 3T? Or am I confusing him with Covington?

Learning that we are getting a 3rd or 4th compensatory for Carl Lawson depending on his performance. Signing outside players like Kerrigan before a certain date would negate that comp pick. I suspect it could be that the Bengals offered to sign him and he has a contract offer for after that specific date and could be why things went quite. Just a guess.

I think we got him when he was coaching in the UFL but he made his name in the Arena league!

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

With Reader, Tupou, Larry, and Daniels there is still room for a 3 tech in the draft (it'll be late unfortunately if they can find one). Also only 3 DE's signed so room for another end if they go with 9. I remember when the line was so deep they went with 10. Doubt that is the case this year.

Daniels is ok. He did bring some energy and bite to the defense.

Yes, in my opinion. Someone to rotate with Reader during a draft year that doesn’t have a lot quality NTs.

I also saw him interviewed on NFL Network durin start of free agency and it seemed like he wanted to re-sign with the Bengals rather than sign elsewhere.

That was Covington, IIRC.
Daniels is more of a fit for 3T.
He was a former DE with GB who shifted inside. The thought was he'd do better inside given his strength, and he really wasn't a great pass rusher outside (only at most 6.5 sacks in a season).
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins

I love the fire he brings to the team. From what I hear, he was very instrumental in getting the defense (if not the whole team) mentally prepared to beat the shit out of Pittsburgh on MNF.

WHO DEY!!

STOP!!

My source corrected himself. It's not Daniels, but it IS a Dlineman. Guess we'll have to see.
Today I'm TEAM SEWELL. Tomorrow TEAM PITTS. Maybe TEAM CHASE. I can't decide, and glad I don't have to.

I guarantee we will draft a DE.  Good chance we take 2.

Not a good look for those already suspicious of "sources".

We've been pretty good around here avoiding starting threads with non verified reports of players signing/re-signing.

Hopefully we can continue that standard.

I should've known better than to trust a guy with "sources" who also carries a Q motto in his sig.  Ooof.

The reason I was asking was that I kind of see our DL depth like this:

NT: Reader, Tupou
3T: Ogunjobi, ?????, Wren
DE: Hendrickson, Hubbard, Kareem

I figured at least one more DE + a 3T for 9 DL. Though I guess we could carry 10. Another NT type confused me. Though I guess Wren is no sure thing for the roster. Nor Tupou since he sat out last year.

That's the depth chart I have too.
3T = Ogunjobi, Daniels, Wren
NT = Reader, Tupou
DE = Hendrickson, Hubbard, Kareem, and likely a draft pick

I could see them adding both a DT and DE and carrying 10 DL given Ogunjobi, Daniels, and Tupou are in contract year.

In my mind, this is a prove it year for Zac.  If they suck again, he should be canned.

Good news, wanted him back. Also would like Margus back and maybe even Covington, don't know if it was just a 1 year
deal with Covington? Didn't know Daniels was instrumental in mentally preparing our D that night, that is awesome.

He was given a substantial raise to stay after he proved himself.  Marvin had one of the best paid staffs of assistants.

These 1st Round picks before Taylor who never lived up to 1st Round money are being let go.  Green the exception because he did have great years, just not lately.  Ogbuehi, Jackson, Ross are Gone, and Price probably soon to follow if he doesn't get with it.  Bengals using that Cap Money to rebuild keeping players like Daniels from within, but looking outside as last few years bringing in Non Bengals to Bengals. In last 2 off seasons, Bengals D is seeing players from other teams brought in, Defensive Back especially.

So yes, I like now the Bengals being kept after the first weeks of Big Free Agent Money, signed at probably more realistic contracts. Setting themselves up for Draft coming soon.  Latest keeps of Evans and Daniels are good moves because there are only so many Draft Picks.  In all fairness to Coach Lewis, I think The Game changed on him, and he at end was not rolling with the changes.  I think Coach Taylor is of the New NFL Era, and is trying to bring Bengals into how The Game is played Now, but it takes a couple years to over haul a team and remake it.  I really feel The Bengals did not change with the times under Coach Lewis. I also feel coaches Zimmer and Gruden came in and made Lewis look better for a few years. I did not expect a new coach to come in here and win over night. I expected rebuilding The Bengals would indeed take a couple years due to players locked in to big contracts, but we see those players now going fast. I feel the game had long passed Lewis by, and these changes last couple years under Taylor have been long over due, but a complete Rebuild takes a couple years.  I did not expect wins in 2019 or 2020.  However, I think the Team is starting to take shape now To Win.  Paul Brown said this in 1968, do not expect wins the first years as he built the team.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see things that way at all.

Marvin didn't get to sign free agents. That was up to the front office, as it is now.

Marvin didn't want Ross, but Tobin took him anyways.

Marvin expected Whit back, but Troy the Turd insulted Whit and low balled him.

Sample in the 2nd round???

It's hard to mess up on the #1 overall pick when there's a clear cut best guy to take.

Taylor was involved in re-signing Hart to a 3 year deal. He was also in on signing Miller to a 3 year deal. And Webb to a 3 year deal. And that LB Brown to a 3 year deal.

Most of those guys washed out after 1 year. Hardly quality talent evaluation.

Taylor just plain sucks. His record is horrible and it's 100% on him.

I think this is coming from Zim Whodey on Twitter, the guy who does the OITNB podcast with Ace Boogie. He says that they're signing a D-lineman today. He also says that he heard it from the player.
