Honestly, there's not a lot Trump could have done to prevent the spread. Viruses are viruses. But talking about how great you are months after getting rid of pandemic experts and while promoting people going out it kind of crappy. Likewise, talking about how few people have it when there's no way to test for it is also crappy.
Trump fails at lots of things, but not being crappy. He excels at that.
Well, his first suggestion which I remember was to threaten to close the border with Mexico. As if that would have done anything. But, instead he could have ordered 14 day quarantine for travelers from the high risk countries a lot sooner instead of calling it a hoax, claiming the numbers were false, or making idiotic suggestions like closing the border with Mexico.

100% agreed on every bit of your post.
I guess I am just getting testy after seeing weeks of trending hashtags like "#TrumpGenocide", and plenty of others similar... when any sane person knows that if Trump had immediately taken this seriously and put the country on lockdown, the exact same people crying about how he didn't respond strongly like South Korea, would be crying about how Trump is a dictator crushing all of our rights in a rise to power similar to the Third Reich. Can you imagine the reaction if he locked down millions of people and used the police/military to keep them in their homes like they did in China?
I mean, it's a huge problem with thousands of people dying and people were STILL going to beaches for Spring Break, coughing on people/food in stores on purpose, and generally just being assholes ignoring the threat (is there anything more frustrating in this outbreak than trying to talk sense into your parents?).
Trump has continued to excel at being crappy, but even if he didn't I pose that our current situation wouldn't be any better because for better or worse, we are Americans. We don't take well to people telling us what to do, even if it's in our best interest.

...and be called a racist for targeting Asian countries, and have the order put on hold while it was challenged in court, defeating the purpose of it.

The CDC has 20 quarantine stations and the have temporary quarantine stations on military bases specifically for Covid-19. Have any of those been challenged in court?
Have any his travel restrictions from source countries been challenged in court?
When has Trump referred to his unsecured iPhone as his Chinaphone? Because it comes from China.

They may have. Or if he had communicated the necessity and done it gradually and reasonably, people might have been ok.
I live in Kentucky. We're getting a lot of praise for Andy. But he's really just shutting things down gradually and following suit of other states. The difference is,he's doing it reasonably. His conferences, he deflects any political question. No name calling, no partisanship. He just talks about what people need to do, politely calls out a few places, then shows happy Twitter posts.
Trump, on the other hand, talks about Obama being at fault and blames other countries.

Agree that #TrumpGenocide is stoopid.
But don't agree with the bolded. The people complaining loudest would be all those who originally called the virus a "Dem hoax" and even now don't want to close schools and restaurants and empty churches because it would "shut down the economy."
