Three Biggest Draft Needs

He was the DC in Minnesota for a year before he got the Steelers job.

In terms of immediate depth - WR, S, LB
That is as it stands right now. If the team re-signs Jones or Sanu as well as AJ and Wright or Alfred emerges WR doesn't become such a high priority.

Yeah, that's my thought as well. We probably will re-sign one of Sanu and Jones, and then even if you lose Little (and is Tate on a 1 year deal?) Alford and Wright are your depth (and pretty good). I'm more concerned about TE depth (though that is in part because I simply haven't seen enough of what is behind Eiffert and Hewitt).

You're right about S. I love Iloka and Nelson but it is doubtful we keep both. I'm not really sold on the depth there. And LB and NT needs help for the reasons everyone is stating.

OTOH, we still can probably go BPA in the early rounds and fill other needs through later picks or FA. There are no urgent 'we have nothing at this position' needs right now.

After watching three quarters of this game we may need two.

This pass rush is awful.

If Kessler is Dalton 2.0, there should be a bunch of teams drafting him high first round.

These threads are fun to revisit.

In August, ML was a lousy coach.
MB was a lousy owner.
AD was a lousy QB
We had no pass rush

I am with you, if Kessler is an AD clone, he would be a likely top 5 pick in the NFL next year.

There is a long way to go so I anticipate some ups and downs along the way, but this entire thread sure looked like gloom and doom early.

NT, SAM, MIKE

If Nelson or Iloka isn't re-signed, we need a S early in the draft.

Need depth/competition at center.

Need depth at WR. Tate and Little probably aren't Bengals next year, and Alford hasn't seen the field yet. Wright is a complete unknown and can't stay healthy. (Can/will the Bengals re-sign both Sanu and Jones? I hope so.)

Need legit blocking TE and not a bandaid blocker.

The more and more I watch this team, the more I realize that we have solid players at every position. So, I wouldn't be shocked to see another BPA draft by the Bengals.

Now, if EVERYONE is back next year, I would say the needs are:

1. Safety. I'm high on Derron Smith and Shawn Williams. The replacement may already be on the roster.
2. LB. I think this part of the team has the least quality depth. I would love to see a true MIKE on this team that could cover down the seam as well as punish people in the running game.
3. DT. I think we need another BIG run stuffing DT. Sims hasn't been as big of a factor as I thought he would be in the rotation.

I'm with you on this, especially at DT. Sims must have been viewed as back up only going in, though we'd be hurting a little if we had a top pick in training instead. At least Sims has experience. Hunt is another I'd like to see replaced with an upgrade.

And am I the only one wondering if Kirkpatrick is ever going to get "there"? Missed tackles still, and giving too much cushion causing him to scramble to catch up is driving me nuts (not a far drive). Can't have too many top CB's these days.

I may be wrong, but I think Sims is hurt and why he was not active

I am not worried about Dre K. This is year one as a full time starter. The Bengals leave them on a island (rarely play zone) so yes they will get beat, but every CB gets beat so I anticipate it. Jones is a vet CB, why would I expect Dre to be as good as a fellow #1 draft pick like Jones? It has taken Jones many starts to get as good as he is right now. I remember A. Johnson schooling Jones a few years ago in a playoff game for a long TD. They all get beat.

I'm on board with these: DE, LB, WR, DT. Best available. I'd even take a high ranking OG if the value is there.

I think Thompson will be Peko's replacement. He's solid.

Our biggest weakness is LB and then DE. We need another guy like Dunlap. MJ is decent at stopping the run, but doesn't seem to pressure the QB very much.

I'm going to say we really only have 2 areas of need.

LB - outside of Burfict they are bad and we're not even sure if he'll ever be the same, hoping they give Dawson a chance.
DT - we need a big run stuffing nose tackle, Geno's back to 100%, Dunlap is playing awesome, MJ looks a little hobbled this season, but with a big stout run stuffer that would make them 3 even better.

after these 2 positions, I'd say go for a solid WR someone who could be an underneath guy CB for depth and hopefully to push Dre K., S/DE

In reality the Bengals coaches have to come up with developmental picks in the lower rounds then plan for best player available in the areas of DE, LB, WR, DT. Usually WR is a bit of a roll of dice with lower round picks blossoming and high round picks sometimes just flat out failing.

They've been true to their board grading and that's why they've done so well in the draft.

Can you really say that about the last few drafts though?

Most of our recent defensive picks have been no-shows, disappointing or flat out busts.
Still, Thompson, Hunt, Dre, Dennard, Flowers, Porter...
Too early to say on Hardison or Shaw but arrow seems up on Shaw.

Dre and Dennard both seem to have a similar career arch. Not much playing time as rookies, now some injuries....

Corner- Leon will be 31 and Pacman will be 32 and both are on the final year of there deals. Plus Kirkpatrick has to prove he is a long term answer as well. Outside of pass rushers Corner has to be the second most valuable position on defense.
Flanker WR- I think we keep Sanu over Jones  so we better  draft another speed guy who line opposite of AJ.

I still think these three things are needs but I would like to add an athletic LB to the list.

Vontaz isnt known as a burner at LB and Neither is Dawson. Lamur is a free agent along with V Rey so I don't think it's that much of stretch to add another coverage LB in the draft.

Burfict and Dawson are not athletic....not even anywhere remotely close to it.
They just aren't. They are decidedly mediocre athletes.

Lamur isn't very good at football. So it would help if the next LB we added was athletic AND good at football.
