Training Camp: News, Notes & Updates

Even if you use PfF data, haven’t seen it from them for last year, over the previous three years no one runs any coverage more than roughly 75% of the time, and that has never included an Austin defense.

I would like to see the data. Link?

It’s pay walled and I’m not supposed to have the login. I think they tweeted about it last year though, let me see if I can find it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Austin's scheme was the infamous, "Stand around and get torched and blame it on someone else soon as you get fired scheme" ..

Here is a tweet from a writer referencing the man stats through 16 weeks.

So according to their data they were in man 43% and zone 41%.

Doesn’t include screens prevent or combo coverages, if our wondering why it isn’t 100%.

What in the name of common core math is going on there?  If you pick any team, add up their percentages of attempts faced in zone and man, it never comes to 100%.  And what's worse?  The combined total varies from team to team..

Teryl Austin was a chuck bresnahan clone. It was incredibly obvious after week 1 at Indianapolis.

Don't know why they would discount screens but prevent and combos are mostly zones also would love to see how it breaks down by game because they were alot heavier in man coverage under Marvin.

Combos can be man as well and many people run a three high man prevent. Bottom line, there are no stats anywhere, there or PFF, that support “nearly 90%” coverage by any defense.

Lol. And the famous play off the wide receiver 10 yards in the red zone defense.

From yesterday's practice--

https://www.bengals.com/news/camp-report-band-on-the-run

A few things--

The offense got their manhood back against the defense yesterday.

Jeff Driskel having a very good camp. Hitting on about 80% of his passes, which seems a far cry from his scatter gun passing last year.

John Ross day to day, says he is ready to go but coaches being cautious with him.

Josh Malone making plays but still struggling some with consistency.

Glad to hear Driskel is passing well, we need a solid back up in case of injury to AD.

Malone needs to stay healthy in camp and all year, if, so we may have another receiving threat while AJ is out. He has the body and athleticism of a #1 WR, not all of receivers do so let's hope and pray he steps up.

And it is especially bad when you play the kind of soft zones we were doing especially with Austin.

I could see a problem asking a guy who only played zone to play press man on the line of scrimmage, but I think any DB who can play man can play zone.

Thanks for the updates Holic and McC and whoever else has been updating. Been reading them but was out of town last week again and don't like posting on my phone. Hope Ross gets healthy and on track with Dalton for heck sake. Getting tired defending the guy. I do think our Offense will be much better this year regardless as long as the O-line plays okay. Definitely think the Defense will be much better than last season. Exciting times, football is back baby.
