CNN cropped a picture similar to that sign, most likely to avoid confusing the issue until his motives are known, so some people jump to the conclusion they're covering up for the shooter being in Isis. Which, as of right now, it looks like he was a mentally ill soldier. Which, instead of discussing mental illness, its easier to just say "look. Over there, its Isis!"

Alaska fits in more with someone going through some struggles more than a terrorist. A lot of the non-native people I met there said they went to Alaska because they couldn't deal with people/society wherever they came from.
