An easy test for an informal setting like this is: Did they either use a slur or speak in a way that degrades a whole class of people? If the answer is "yes", then it's hate speech.
Or maybe since this is an informal setting. Not letting a word ruin your day.
I guess it's going to be hate speech when someone tosses out anti conservative language. Since that is a group of people .
