It's not because TR was a conservative, and he was absolutely a Republican (which was his complaint about his nephew, FDR, that he was a Democrat). It was the backlash to FDR that really began the ideological divide.
that's why I don't cling to party names as a mantra. It is far better to understand the political philosophy of each party at the time period being talked about.
