Not in the perspective of this country. 50 years is about one-eighth of the history of European colonization of this country. If we ignore the time before that (as many people tend to) 50 years is a sizeable chunk of our history. That is why so many people think of it as so long ago. It's about one-fifth of the age of our country itself (whether we use 1776 or 1789, we're on the side to round up to that).

You're right, 50 years isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. But when people think about it in relation to the age of the country it is a long time ago. It's not that I disagree, just explaining why some people feel that way.
