I see the narrowing down as the main driver, at least in the US. Every major city now has the same stretch of road with the same chain stores and restaurants etc. Here in Northern Ky, any doctor's office, specialist, medical lab worth a crap is now under the St. Elizabeth moniker. It's as if we never had any anti-monopoly laws ever. The proverbial homogenization seems nearly complete. All symptoms/products of fewer cultures.
