Early nuclear testing didn't have the benefit of computer aided data collection. Smoke rockets were launched prior to detonation to give reference in photos like this one for how fast the explosion grew, how far fallout cloud would travel, etc. When you look at one photo it looks weird, but if you look at a collection of them you can see the time lapse effect. That would allow them to calculate how fast things happened.
