Because the wall has been touted as a way to keep criminals (and drugs and babies..I think) out of the US when most of the criminals are natural born. Not many illegal immigrants arrested for things like this guy.
The argument that we need a wall to be "safe" is a lie. You are never "safe". You CAN be prepared and diligent...but the criminal can be your neighbor rather than some foreign looking guy.
